Luvachicken
I built one this morning it took me 20 minutes tops, and cost me £20 in materials. 3.5 Meters of chain between 3-5mm thick, 4 x Dee Shackles 2 x Ring Bolts 1 x Broom Handle I think there is something like a broomhandle in the shed and some spare lilac paint, not sure about the chains though. Another little project for hubby......
Chortle Chook
OH had a DIY rebellion. "Dee shackles? What the H*** are they?" Never mind, I'm gonna get me a chicky swing as the kindest of people has offered to make me one. I'm so excited. Can't wait to see my chooks enjoying themselves. They had a sandpit last Xmas so it's a swing for them this Xmas and next one they can have a climbing frame Who knows they may even get a C saw at some point . . . Cheeky Chooky
Ours have a climbing frame. I made it three levels and then have a perching bar higher than that. They love climbing up and down to the perch and sit for hours at the top watching the world go by and doing feather maintenance. Oooh that sounds good! Couldn't post a pic could you? Chortle Chook
WIR only just set up and you're ready to make it all lovely and exciting. I know that on here somewhere there have been some excellent illustrations of WIRs with bars, seats, climbing fames, you name it. All such fun to make up I wish I could remember who did it all. nikkichick
Went to homebase, bought a length of pipe, 2 meters of washine line, some bolts and 2 carribiner clips. No swinging chook action yet but we'll wait and see. Either way, thier not swinging but they are spending a lot of time looking at it thinking, 'what the hel is that?' Chortle Chook
My chook swing is up now and I'm really chuffed with it, but I'm not sure my chickens are very adventurous. They keep all gathering together to have a wary look at it and occasionally one will push it to see how edible it is, but so far "Ooops, word censored!"ody will get on it. I think, perhaps, they are wary of things that move I can see a bit if human intervention may be necessary this weekend.
House MD 221B
I've had a couple of attempts at trying to "assist" them onto it.... they were not on impressed lol. But I have been thinking, the place we got our girls from, didn't have many perches, Out garden has stuff for them to perch on but it's part of other things, like the walls of the veg beds etc. They've been in an Eglu Classic (on the ground). So really they've never bothered with "altitude" as it were, the Eglu Cube today was a new experience for them, they've got 'Down' sorted just about, and tomorrow we shall see if they've got 'Up' as well. But hopefully once they get used to the ladder, they might be more interested in the swing. Would love to see a pic at some point CheekyChook
Chortle Chook
I won't forget to get you a pix, House MD, but so far they are not getting on it by themselves. However I think this has more to do with the dreadful weather we are having. When the sun comes out they will get some 'gentle persuasion' and if they stay long enough I'll post a pix. House MD 221B
lol bless 'em, no worries ours still haven't used it, but as we're out alot today and the wind is bad we're leaving them in the WIR in case a fence panel comes down, so will keep a sneaky eye out today also lol
reneepren
To get them to try the swing, could you use a clothes pin or such to attach a treat they could only get by perching on the swing? Renee
House MD 221B
We tried that.... they jumped and pulled it off lol Impressive as it was securely clipped onto the chain
