redfrock
I have succeeded in getting my girls to push open their eglu doors in the morning so that I don't have to get up at silly-o-clock to let them out (I found I was getting up earlier and earlier - the last count being 5.30am ). Anyway i woke up this morning needing a drink (we went out for a chinese with friends celebrating a birthday last night, but doesn't it always leave you thirsty!) ... I digress... so I got up to get my glass of water and thought I would peer out of the window just to see if they were awake. They were and running around in their run. It was 3.30am! They don't go to bed until 10pm. I wish I needed so little sleep. I was stunned to find they were already up and out! I am so glad they are letting themselves out, otherwise they would be awake cooped up in their houses waiting. No wonder they always used to squawk impatiently at me as I approached the run. Jools
They're guided by daylight hours, so they catch up on their beauty sleep in winter
Snowy
No idea what time mine come out - must be early as I caught them all having a power nap in the sunshine at 10am
chrisnrob
Ours get let out at about 7:30am each morning when one or other of us wakes up. They don't seem at all impatient to get out and there's certainly no squawking. Maybe they're just very well bred Rob

Tina C
Mine used to wait patiently till I let them out at 6.30-7.00. Then we went on holiday and I realised that the house sitter was not going to get up that early (more like 9.00 am on a good day) so I started leaving doors open. They seem to get up at about 4.30 but I have noticed that they 'rest' more during the day now.
Laura & CTB
CTB has to get up for work at 3am and he says the girls usually get up at about 4am. As they dont go to bed until 9pm I can excuse them for dropping off to sleep during the day I love watching them though - they lean into the patio window, kind of slide down it then doze off with their heads tucked under their wing - how cute is that
Egluntyne
Mine are out and about before 5am.
marky mark
How funny! I was just wondering the exact same thing this morning! I just went to feed the girls at 8am and they were still upstairs - I could hear them talking so they were awake but they only came downstairs when they saw breakfast! ali-s
Mine are out and about at 2.30am this time of year and not in bed until 11pm They practically hibenate in winter as our winter days are so short They don't get up until nearly 9am and back inside the Eglu as early as 2.30pm if it is a miserable dark day. Richard
Yep - isn't the summertime great. Mine spend so little time in the Eglu that it hardly gets mucky at all! Not like the winter, when they seem to live inside most of the day and I end up cleaning the poo tray several times a week!
chelsea
mine have to stay in until I let them out 6.30 am ish. Ella is a very naughty noisey chicken so If I left them to their own devices they would have the whole of my village up
redfrock
mine have to stay in until I let them out 6.30 am ish. Ella is a very naughty noisy chicken so If I left them to their own devices they would have the whole of my village up my neighbours claim they hardly hear them apart from when they have just laid. I think this may be partly due to egg bribery! I certainly think my girls are noisy and worry something chronic but we have figured out that they are generally only noisy if (i) one of them has laid and then they all join in to say how clever she was or (ii) they see me! I was standing ironing this morning and they could see me from a distance and that really set them off. Strangely they are not so bad if it is my husband they see. Thankfully they don't seem to be a problem in the small hours .... (probably just cursed myself now!)
chelsea
The other day I woke up before 5am and was convinced I could hear Ella bawk bawk bawking....went to back bedroom window about 6 times listening intently and all was quiet out the back....so I must have been imagining chicken noises....how bad is that ??!!? My two also communicate VERY loudly across the garden to each other as if to say "coooeeeee im over here" which is rather embarrassing. Couperwife
Ours have to wait until about 7am, I normally wake up at about 6:45, so they must be chuntering to get out. when im sorting out the run - putting the food out (dont like the thought of advertising to foxes and rats that there is food left out all night) and putting fresh water out for them they are making on heck of a racket, obviously yelling at me to hurry up!
