Cinnamon
I would love to hear other peoples ideas,& of course see some photos when they are done too This year,I want to do Royal icing (after swearing I would never do it again!). I prefer the taste & I want the icing to look very spiky & snow like. I have got the most gorgeous iridescent white sparkly edible glitter to sprinkle & top & I fancy popping a few Penguins on it too,if I can find them (any ideas, anyone?) It will be on a silver board 7 I have a nice silver ribbon for it too.
Patricia W
Penguins are really easy to make out of coloured fondant icing that you buy out, plus a little white. Just roll a small ball for the head and a larger one for the body. Slash two slits at the side of the body for wings and pull out a little. Then roll a small ball of white for the bib on the tummy and flatten it to fit. Get some yellow or orange ( mix the yellow and red fondant for orange). Make a carrot shape for the beak and stick on. Two small flattened balls of the yellow/orange make the feet which stick out under the tum. I then use a cocktail stick to make holes for the eyes and make a scarf by rolling a strip to go round the neck and fringing the ends with a knife. Make them different sizes so you can have a colony of mum, dad and little ones. Easy peasy!

craftyhunnypie
Go on I dare you Cinnamon! Or get your daughters to make Emo or Goth penguins! I'm going for the top iced only this year, as most was pulled off by various eaters last year. I've bought a red & silver cake board, a red cake frill & a snowman & Merry Christmas resin ornamenty thingymabob. Ours is being soaked in port. Mm mm mmmm. chickencam
Ours will be the usual prickly snow scene with a holly leaf decoration which came on a yule log which has already been consumed.
Olly
Not good at icing (although I would happily make the little penguins described above!) and don't really like eating it. I'm making a Florentine cake this year with fruit and nuts on top. No icing required!
Seagazer
I've got a little polar bear to go on my icing. I was just going to use the ready roll icing that I used last year but I really like the idea of spiky icing with silver glitter on it, hmmm I might give it a go I think (it'll give YS something to help me with once he's broken up from school)
Space Chick
I've cheat and bought ready rolled marzipan and icing and have bought a tree, Santa and snowman to go on the top
Mrs Webmuppet
Our cake is flat iced with fondant icing, covered in little stars cut out of the left over icing and a heavy sprinkling of edible glitter so it looks all frosty. Chickendoodle
My YD (now married) always comes to help with the Christmas cake. This year her new husband is also helping. We have done various things in the past as she is very artistic. A strictly come dancing themed dancing snowmen, skating and skiing penguins, santa head first down a chimney, carol singers. Will see what emerges this year. I have also made 2 cakes for friends and I will use a set of graduated snowflake cutters I got from Lakeland - you can either just cut them out and scatter over the cake or sit them on top of each other like a snowflake tree. I will be in charge of those and leave my clever YD to do her thing on the main one.
Cinnamon
Mine is now marzipaned, & I will ice it in a couple of days. Cleo is going to make some icing penguins for me
WitchHazel
Ooh, just found this thread again.] I don't like icing or marzipan, so for our christmas cake I usually make Delia's Creole cake and cover it with her Glazed Nut topping. I haven't decorated our yet, but here is the one I made for a friend I made 2 iced cakes as well, for other friends. This year I've gone for a much fussier decoration. I have an 8" square Creole cake for us, I'm going to attempt to cut it into four smaller cakes and decorate them.
Cinnamon
Oh Delias creole cake is my absolute favourite...so much fruit & booze! I always used to do the nut topping for it too, which I think looks really festive & gorgeous

clucker1
I have made Delia's Creole recipe for the third time this year. My family (including the children from age 5+) have loved it...this year I have added glace cherries to the nuts on top. Also, my secret ingredient is tropical dried fruit which makes it really delicious.
