Birdsong - Sebastian Faulkes book to BBC

Recommended Posts

I've seen the trailer for this a few times now and I think I may watch it. I didn't like the book at all, and didn't finish it, so I am not sure if I will actually like it, but it does look beautifully filmed.

What I'd love to know is, does anyone know what the music is in the trailer for it? It seems very familiar, but I just can't place it. I think it reminds me of a Radiohead song, but not sure.

I watched it. Mixed opinion. True to the book (which I loved) so far, the settings are absolutely perfect, and the scenes of carnage in the trenches are very moving, but there are far too many lingering shots of Stephen gazing into middle distance. Entire half hours seem to go by in this manner.

Also ... the person who plays Isabelle is too young. In the book Isabelle is described as being 5 or 6 years older than Stephen.

I also loved the book and watched with trepidation. It is different in that they have made the pre-war love story a flashback and not a proper timeline.

I have come to the conclusion that you have to watch adaptations of books as a different experience to reading as there is no way that the depth of a book such as Birdsong can be conveyed on the screen.

I think the flashback device is clever as Stephen is entering into a daydream amidst the horrors of war and the love story therefore has a dreamlike quality (hence the long looks)

The depiction of the carnage and fear at the Battle of the Somme is so moving in the book - I wonder how much will be capable of being captured on the screen on Sunday

So, what did everyone think of last night's episode?

I still have mixed feelings about it. Some bits that were obviously supposed to be highly emotionally charged totally failed to move me at all and I lost interest :? Yet other bits I found quite compelling. I'm afraid both OH and I burst out laughing when he hugged the German soldier, I'm sure that's not the response that it was supposed to provoke!

Not bad overall.

I didn't watch the second episode. I will probably look it up later this week on iplayer.

But back to my original question, I think I have found the answer. It is apparently 'Sun Dog' instrumental by Speech Debelle and Kwes who I have never heard of so is unlikely I have heard the song either.

I've read the book and found it harrowing so I'm not sure why I thought to watch the BBC version except that the pictures of France before the war looked so beautiful as did Isabelle's lovely face (and clothes), but yesterday I just could not watch the whole thing. After a cold, sunless day it was all just too grim :(

I hate the whole WW1 thing. Unlike WW2 it seems all that carnage had absolutley no reason whatsoever and I just can't understand why after two WWs humanity are still fighting. There really is no hope for the human race it seems
