welovemarmite
ok, i am suffering from ear ache. Its the tubes coming out that are blocked. Can't remember the name of them but they begin with E. I have done the blowing thing to clear them, I have tried inhalations and decongestants. They hurt and its horrid. I was at the docs yesterday to pick up a prescription and there were posters everywhere saying ear ache does not need antibiotics, so there is little point in seeing a doctor. Anyone got any other remedies?
Cinnamon
I have always found warmth very soothing for earache,& lay down with my ear on a hot water bottle, wrapped in a towel or soft fleecy wrap. Hope this helps
Alis girls
Eustacian tubes - nurofen is good for ear pain as an anti inflammatory (on full stomach) assuming you can take it. And as mentioned heat. Its horrid as is any head pain. get well soon
welovemarmite
i will try the hot water bottle. I am not allowed nurofen as it really mucks my stomach up.
Cinnamon
Another good one for pain & inflammation is Voltarol Pain eze,but I am not sure what the active ingredient is. It is the one I always reach for when by neck goes into spasm,& I know you can only use it for 3 days.
welovemarmite
voltarol is also ibuprofen but as its not hitting my stomach i should be ok. I have some some where so will give it a go. just feeling very cranky and not getting much sleep.
Lavenders_Blue
Bowl of hot water, towel over head, inhale the steam. Don't add anything to the water as decongestants are very stripping which is why they hurt. Plain steam is cleansing and soothing and will loosen any yukkiness. Strepsils (other brands are available ) have the same stripping effect so are best avoided too. Keep an eye on things as you may need antibiotics if the pain continues. Have you had any coughs/colds recently? The Eustachian tube connects the throat and the middle ear so infection can travel from the throat and may need treatment if it does not clear. welovemarmite
I have done the steaming and it doesnt work. I have no conjestion other than the blocked tubes. I lost my voice about 2 weeks ago but other than that nothing. I had a nasty ear infection a couple of ears ago and my right tube has never been the same since. Not sure about the antibiotics given that the posters at the surgery are saying no antibiotics for ear ache.
Tweety
If it's an infection, I would have thought that you will need antibiotics to shift it. I would get it checked out with the doctor to be on the safe side.
chickencam
I would say that as a family that avoids antibiotics if we can, I would always go to the doctors with bad earache. I remember our YD having earache and moaning about it, we had given her Calpol and thought that she was just being a bit miserable which she had a tendency to do when she was about 7 and was always attention seeking. This was our approach until she said that her ear was leaking and there was pus coming out, at which point she felt better because her ear drum had burst. One of my worst moments of guilt as a parent. I would have thought that it is very like toothache and it will not heal itself without antibiotics because it is deep seated. lindafw
I suffer ear ache regularly and ignore or treat with painkillers...eventually I go to the Dr and get a scolding for waiting so long...antibiotics to clear and then a lecture about not itching my itchy ears But the last dr reccomended vinegar..yeas vinegar! a drop in my itchy ear and it stings like ####### then the itch goes

Geoid
I was at the docs yesterday to pick up a prescription and there were posters everywhere saying ear ache does not need antibiotics But, ear ache can be caused by many things and doctors do have other remedies other than just dishing out antibiotics. welovemarmite
I have just put the vinegar in, it feels wonderful and no itch. Will see how it goes. Fred, i know what you are saying, but i have a history of ear ache since i was a child and the only things i have ever been advised/given were antibiotics or steam inhalation. Tried the steam, dont want and wont get the antibiotics so needed another option.
Looney
My Mum always recommends chewing gum! Apparently the chewing can ease pains and itches in the ears and if it has xylitol (sp?) in it it can help too....no idea how or why! Hope your earache eases soon x
BizzyMomma
New Years Eve 2010 I came down with earache, it got worse and worse, and NOTHING could touch it, I was literally in tears with it, which is highly unusual for me as I have a very high pain threshold, eventually succumbed to the out of hours Doc at the local hospital. I was asked how much pain I was in on a scale of 1-10, I replied "11! This is worse than childbirth!" turned out that my eardrum had burst and was heavily infected although I had had no discharge?? Heavy duty anti-biotics and painkillers for 3 weeks and it was a good 8-10 weeks before I fully got my balance back too! Moral of this story? Get thyself checked out ASAP!! {{{HUGS}}} Hope that you are feeling MUCH better very soon!!!
Goosey Lucy
When my blocked Eustachian tubes were infected the dr gave me Otovent to use as well as antibiotics to clear the infection. I was sceptical but it worked and if ever I feel them becoming blocked I use it again. Hope you feel better soon, I hate that blocked up feeling
chickencam
My daughter was given a Beconase nasal spray when her ears were blocked for ages after a cold.
CatieB
My 7 year old has had too many ear infections to quote, we've just been to a new Dr who recommended otovent. It helps to clear out mess, as does blowing even if you think there is nothing to blow. Then apparently the vent that is inside you has a better chance of working to clear the problem. No idea if its working but son loves doing it. it cost :-£8 He was also told to pop his ears although its not something he can do and I would imagine it could be painful for you. Dr said it creates more space?? Edited January 28, 2012 by Guest
chelsea
I get about ten ear infections a year (due to psoriasis in the ear canal) and have Otomize ear spray on repeat prescription, so any little niggles I am in straight away with the spray to get onto the infection pronto. I would definitely go to the doctor, you have my sympathies. Ear ache is horrible.
newcountrygirl
Poor you - I really feel for you. I have always had to be careful cos if i get a bad cold my ears suffer. I have had over the years two abcesses in my ear and they are dreadful - the pain is like no other until it bursts but if it is an abcess then you definately need antibiotics. A warm hot water bottle and painkillers are good - but if it continues go to the doctors - your hearing is precious.

Cinnamon
We had an ear thing today. My 16 year old daughter has had on & off ear problems for about 6 years, including ear ache & muffled hearing. Been to the Doctors time & time again,& she had had every drop under the sun to dissolve a large ball of wax lodged in one ear. Anyhow, she wento to a gig last night & I don't know if it was the vibrations or something, but today she said her ear felt funny, she put her finger in & felt something very hard & not very deep in. Unbeknown to me,she then put tweezers in (I know,I know...)& pulled out an earring back, one of the long ones, not a butterfly one,all encrusted with rock hard wax The Doc said several times that she could see something reflective, but thought it was trapped water. It must have been in there for years. The daughter now thinks everything sounds very loud................................ Anyhow, get thee to the Doctors & I hope you get better soon
