chickens for blue eggs

Recommended Posts

Hi

I asked this in reply to blue eggs, but thought i might be best asking it in chickens.....

I have just got three amber links and will be having a run made so theres more room, and im thinking of getting a chicken roughly the size as my amber links or a couple of bantams and i want to get a breed which lays blue eggs, i was thinking of getting a columbine but you only get a 80% chance, ive read about cream leg bars.

Wondered what was best advised for a good blue egg layer thats simular in nature as amber links

(second topic this morning finding chickens are getting addictive)

Any blue egg layer will never be as gentle and laid back as an amber link. They are by nature a bit more scatty, flighty and less friendly (although some do improve once they come into lay!).

You may also struggle introducing 1 to 3 as the newbie would be picked on. You would be better introducing 2 to 3.

Araucanas or Cream Legbars would be guaranteed to give a blue or green egg.

I've got a cream legbar and I've had a columbine (one of the 20%) althrough to begin with they were stand offish both were/are friendly very treat oriented the CLB isn't always the sharpest tool in the box but she makes up for it in personality

I've also got a daughter from each of them and you can tell that they are related personality wise

I'd recommend cream legbars or columbines every time

I have two araucanas and three cream legbars in my mini flock and they are both great breeds.

My legbars are fairly tame, since I got them as day olds (a benefit of legbars over araucanas is that they are autosexing, so sexed from day old, with araucanas sometimes you just have to wait for a crow or an egg). They can be a bit skittish sometimes and all of the legbars are by far the noisest birds, especially when they are laying. Two of mine lay green eggs, the other lays blue.

I love my araucanas, they are my favourite breed, but the sexing is difficultand unreliable at best. Mine lay very good sixed, porcelin coloured eggs, and are very charming and sweet. Araucana's also often continue laying further into the autumn that other breeds, but normally start later in the spring than the others.

Either way, both breeds are great, and cream legbars are mostly quite common, so I would consider getting one, as that way you have your gaurenteed blue or green eggs, plus if you get them as young chicks they you have the chance to make them good and tame before you put them outside.

Hope this helps.

Tim

My amber link is very friendly and top chook, I have two columbines one lays blue green eggs the other darker green speckled eggs, they are not as friendly as the amber link but I love the coloured eggs. I also have two snowbelles who lay beautiful large pure white eggs but they are the least friendly of all the chooks, they are smaller than the others and move very quickly when they want to :lol:

Hi

I have a heritage skyline called Nervous Nerys which we got from http://www.henhousepoultry.co.uk/

she is scatty, quite a big old bird but lays medium sized blue shelled eggs regularly. Never lets you pick her up but quite friendly otherwise.

Actually thinking about it her shells are more of a pale green !egggreen! rather than blue but still quite a talking point.
