The Olympics - the sport

Recommended Posts

One of my boys is at the Olympics in a police capacity and another in an army role. I'm hoping against hope that they get together some time so that I can get a photo of them in their uniforms. As they're twins and look very similar it would be a funny picture.

My mum's coming up to London to watch the men's triathlon tomorrow and popping by so I've got a marathon of my own today. Tidying the house and garden! I will deserve gold.

We were away at a competition this weekend so missed most of the golds :( but we did manage to catch some on the radio and then when we were out to dinner with the team on Saturday night they had a television on so we saw Jessica Ennis finish do the 800 (I think) and Mo Farrah do his last lap. :D:clap:

Well done to Andy Murray for his gold, so glad he won.

Great weekend for Team GB :clap::dance::clap:

I watched the athletics again last night, and also caught a bit of the showjumping during the day.

Is it just me or was the men's 100m final a totally over-hyped event? Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed watching it and I understand it's all about finding the fastest runner in the world, but it seemed to overshadow all the other events that were going on, as if it were more important than the rest of them. Personally I would have liked to watch a bit more hammer throwing!

I have also noticed that a few of our athletes seem to be disappointed with silver/bronze medals. I can't help wondering if there has been too much pressure on them to achieve gold which has made a silver/bronze medal seem like a failure? I think it's a shame as a silver or bronze medal is still an incredible achievement - I think Rebecca Adlington said so after winning her silver medal and I totally agree with her.

More showjumping today :D I will be trying to keep half an eye on it whilst working... we'll see how well I get on!

It is a real shame when they feel that they have let everyone down by getting silver or bronze, this still means that they are in the top three at their event in the world. The rowers on Saturday took it particularly badly and we were all shouting at the TV you have a silver medal and haven't let us down. I suppose as an athlete winning is everything, I can understand them being disappointed personally but they shouldn't feel that they have let GB down.

BUT.........the next commentator to say "ath-a-lete" will be shot! - I have the shotgun ready!

I'm going to set the dogs on the next one who says that ABC person has 'medalled' or 'podiumed' Having said that, I am really enjoying the time to sit down and watch some really excellent sport. to all the athletes taking part.

The triathlon was great, didn't spot my family in the crowd (!) , so many people, my brother said central London was a sea of red, white and blue.

I love how quickly you can think you're some kind of sport expert. I became engrossed in the dressage. I know absolutely nothing about horses let alone dressage yet found myself questioning the quality of a pirrouette.

Laura Trott - what a girl , two golds.

So pleased to hear of our wonderful equestrian team winning yet ANOTHER medal  (Not 'medalling' - I'm with you on that one DM). Those who haven't followed equestrian sport before may be interested to know that 'dressage' comes from the French 'dresser' = to prepare. It originally stemmed from cavalry horses being trained, now of course it is more exaggerated but still the ultimate test of a rider's training, preparation and control of their horse.

As part of a 3 day event, consider how important it is to be in full control of a horse whilst charging round a cross country course (well, hopefully not charging!) so it's actually quite an important equestrian discipline!

Oh my goodness! We have been outstanding in the velodrome - Laura Trott and Sir Chris Hoy - fantastic achievement by them both. Sir Chris should be so proud of all he has achieved in the sport.

I felt sorry for Victoria Pendleton, silver is great but it would have been lovely for her to retire on a gold win for her last race. I think it was quite unfair that she was relegated when Mears bumped into her but Mears definitely was the better rider on the night.

I gave myself a sore throat from shouting at the television!:lol:

Just had a look at her website DM, she's plenty young enough so maybe an Olympic competitor for the future? That's one of the things I love about equestrian sports, people can continue to compete for many, many years - Mary King (3 day eventing) is on her 5th Olympic games! Not many athletes can say that, I reckon.

I have run out of superlatives - everything is just so fantastic 8)

Sir Chris Hoy always comes across as such a nice person as well as being superman on a bike, and Laura Trott is such a happy girl as well as being mega talented, it will be lovely to see how she gets on in the future. I feel very sorry for VP, she's had some rough justice, but she seems pleased to be stepping away from it all, and taken as a whole, her career has been outstanding and she has already inspired the new wave of young female riders so I kind of feel what happened last night doesn't matter too much....and she did win a silver! Well done to our entire track team and their trainers and support teams

I think the thing I've liked most is that I have watched quite a few sports in some depth which I wouldn't have done before. Its partly that its been in our own timezone and partly because I work from home  I thought all the horsey events were outstanding, and I've enjoyed the gymnastics, rowing and kayaking. And the other amazing thing is the amount of support - I didn't think we were that interested as a nation, but we obviously are. Take a bow everyone

I've worked from home a fair bit since the Olympics started and am enjoying having the TV on in the background and keeping an eye on what is going on :)

Currently watching the show jumping. Aren't the horses just wonderful? So strong yet elegant 8)

(I am getting some work done as well, honest! )
