Chickabee
I count the days. As soon as we have the longest day I have a small sulk, then when we have the shortest day I have a little whoop

redsunset
Yep, she is eating well. Found her hiding behind a feed box almost under the radiator, so at least she knows where the warmest spot is! Everyone is fed up with the dark nights not to mention the extra cleaning it involves! I can't wait to get my shed, hopefully have it by Tuesday and then a few days to put together. Bought an offcut of Lino for the floor of it today

redsunset
She is around two plus yrs old Mars. A black rock hybrid and a feisty little madam normally and as of two nights ago still is I'm glad to say! Really hope she makes it into the new shed whenever it goes up and lives a good while yet
Mars
I like black rock, I have two of them, well, black sexlink anyway, they are very good layers.
redsunset
Wee Half Chook passed away this afternoon. Thought she looked a bit haunched again this morning and didn't show interest in her food. At least it was indoors and not in the cold and wet we have today. I'm guessing something was going on internally, like egg peritonitis or something else? She had a good free ranging two years and for that I'm happy. gavclojak
Look out for princess layer and merryweather when you free range forever little half chook She was warm and loved,no pet be it dog cat or chook can ask for more

Chortle Chook
So sorry to hear about little Half Chook. You must be upset, especially as she seemed to be doing so much better, but as you say, she died with care and love in the warm and not out in the cold, wet and dark. You were very kind to the wee soul.
redsunset
Thanks everyone. I'd have been more upset if she died hidden under a bush for a few days. I have found a chook dead outside in the past and you feel awful that you didn't 'spot' anything. It was my first death in 9 months which with my initial two years of expanding my wee flock I considered a good gap. Lost quite a few in the first two years. Quite a bunch of them will be over 2 now so will be keeping an eye on them. My shed is STILL in Glasgow and company phoned today for payment re delivery.....£181!!! Expected a hundred but yikes! Said maybe tues, maybe Wednesday.......oh well. Joys of living on an island At least no snow or freezing temps forecast any time soon... gavclojak
I guess that horrific and hefty delivery charge is a trade off for having no darn foxes!
redsunset
True, I'd not trade you for the foxes right enough! As for the weather, woke up today to heavy frost and I have no doubt the daft doodles were high up the tree as usual! They were all fine today so obviously a hard frost in the outdoors does them no harm if healthy but I'd still prefer them snug in a coop. As soon as the shed is up and running I'll move a smaller coop near where they roost in the hope they will use that? My other concern is two huge cockerels......will the boss big Brahma boy allow the SLW into the new shed.......hmmmm
mullethunter
I bet you'll go to all this trouble, they'll have a lovely cosy shed (with chandelier, hot tub and complete Sky package)...and they'll still sleep in the tree!
Mars
I think redsunset. in the memory of your beloved hen you should buy 2 Buff Orpingtons hens

I bet the darn little tinkers will too! Lol! No thought of the 5 star accommodation or the cost! Buff orps will be on the list one day Mars, but would need to hatch my own or possible auction nxt winter ....
Mars
Good job you are not in Ireland redsunset. Here most of the time if you are thinking of getting more hens you need to do three things. open donedeal. make a phone call and drive for an hour or less with 30 to 32 Euros in your pocket and you come home with at least 2 hens or 4 hens of the red star. or a pair of uncommon breed. and once a month on Sunday. there is a poultry market and the best hen rarely exceeds 15 Euro
