patsylabrador
I have curly hair that likes to be a frizzy mess especially when I want to look smart. About a month ago I read an article by a famous hair person that suggested washing hair only with conditioner so I did. I wasn't sure for the first week but now I really like it. I now get nice waves and curls and that's on hair that's in it's fifties. It feels odd to not have bubbly soap on your hair but so long as you work the conditioner in well you're giving your scalp a good wash anyway and avoid the detergents that can cause frizzy joy. Give it a go.
snowberry
My hairs like a dandelion clock, so I'll give this a go, thanks!
Scary Mary
I read the same article and sent it to my daughter who has the most amazing long curly red hair which has a tendancy to be very frizzy. I was very sceptical but she found, as you did, that it really does work and the frizzies have been banished. Mary
Chucky Mama
Interesting. I have just bought some very expensive shampoo and conditioner to try called Alterna Hair Caviar but it is an expensive experiment. I like the sound of the just conditioner thing. Alis girls
i might try it however without washing I have an itchy scalp. I put Morrocan oil on my hair just a small amount and that has really helped the frizzies. I am dark blond and had a red head mum and a hairdresser told me that off spring of red heads often had the frizz factor. not sure if true or if just blonds. abwsco
It's what they recommend on the britishcurlies forum that I've posted about before. I keep meaning to try it out but haven't as yet. My hairs not really frizzzy but curls could be better.
Nikipins
My hair is very co"Ooops, word censored!" and dark red in colour. It tends to be dry and straw like. I only use shampoo about once every 3 washes and use conditioner only Inbetween, I think that help to reduce the dry, straw like quality of my hair. I also try to avoid sodium laureth sulphate in products it's a cheap foaming agent and degreaser added to loads of shower gels, liquid soap, shampoo etc to make them foam but strips the natural oils off the skin and hair and can cause skin and scalp irritation, and I'm sure makes my hair more problematic. Ain't Nobody Here
There was a long discussion about this on the forum ages ago. I tried the "no shampoo" method for quite a few months (I think it was!). It kind of worked but I missed the clean post-shampoo feeling so gave it up eventually. My hair is very co"Ooops, word censored!" and dark red in colour. It tends to be dry and straw like. I only use shampoo about once every 3 washes and use conditioner only Inbetween, I think that help to reduce the dry, straw like quality of my hair. That's exactly what I do now - still get a little frizz but not too bad.
Chicken deficient
I think I'll try the conditioner idea too - my hair is a nightmare when I wash it. If I spend ages straightening it, it starts to look like normal hair that has lots of 'body'. If I don't, I look like I've been hung upside down and electrocuted. CatieB
I read this with great interest. However although my hair is dry and fuzz like it is also greasy at the roots. It usually has be washed at least every other day. Surely I'd still be greasy? Does anyone know?
patsylabrador
What I have found CatieB is that I was having to wash my hair every other day but now I wash it only every three days or so and that's only because I think I should. It doesn't go as flat and greasy on top as it used to. I don't know why that is.
Cinnamon
I tend to fluff rather than frizz, & while I do wash my hair, I use minimal shampoo then a good conditioner. I then use L'Oreals extraordinary oil, which is the stuff of miracles as far as I am concerned - my hair just behaves itself now without throwing a hissy fit every morning
Nicola O
I read this with great interest. However although my hair is dry and fuzz like it is also greasy at the roots. It usually has be washed at least every other day. Surely I'd still be greasy? Does anyone know? I haven't used shampoo for about four years now. I need to wash my hair every day and just use a good conditioner, and I've found it cleans your hair just as well as shampoo (as well as conditioning at the same time ) Nicola
Chucky Mama
I am on day 1 of the conditioner test. I will report back
patsylabrador
I just discovered something else. Back from spin on m'bike and after taking helmet off my hair bounced back much, much quicker than normal.
iar fach goch
Washed hair last night with conditioner only. Feels much lighter this morning and less frizzy. No itchy scalp which I have recently been suffering with. So far so good, will see how things progress.
CatieB
I tried too but not for me I have long hair and the lengths looked much smoother and less frizzy, however the top looked sleek at first but within the day that quickly changed to flat and greasy. I am on day two and I've had to put it up. It feels greasy and my scalp also feels like it needs a wash. I think my hair isn't frizzy or curly enough to warrant this but I can see from the ends why it would work for more frizz prone hair. Charlottechicken
OH was also trying this, but has given up as it doesn't suit his hair type. I think this works for heavier/frizzier hair? OH has been experimenting as he has long ringlets but very fine hair. He is currently having success with just wetting his hair and running a bit of Avon conditioning mask (avocado and almond I think) or Boots mousse for curly hair, through the ends. He also has dry hair so doesn't need to wash it that often.
patsylabrador
I wasn't sure at first either and put off posting until my hair settled down. I think glands/follicles and things in the skin have to adjust. My individual hairs are fine and can be fragile but I think there's a lot of them. I use a lot of moisturisers on my skin generally so it could be this method suited my skin type. Shame it didn't work but it's worth trying - you know you're worth it! Chucky Mama
Sadly it was not for me. I went 3 days but had a itchy scalp. It could have been in my mind My hair was soft and a little less frizzy but it also lacked curl. I have decided to try washing and conditioning twice which I think may help. Thanks for posting, it was worth a try
iar fach goch
Well it's been nearly two weeks since I used shampoo and success! My hair looks and feels much nicer! Even OH commented tonight that my hair was less straw like than usual! My scalp is less itchy than usual, my skin has been really suffering with this long winter, since dropping the shampoo my scalp feels much better. Thanks for the tip! The Dogmother
This reminds me of the 'no shampoo' thread a few years back.
