Hayleybug
poor Lola, OH found her in the run near the door and thought she was just having a chill out on the floor but the poor little thing had died feel awful, OH bless him picked her up and put her in a paper sack to save me from seeing her (she was my favourite) but i felt i had to take her out and look her over to see if there was anything obvious that could have been the cause. she had what looks like a minor prolapse, looked like a little pile really (sorry, bit graphic) but didnt look that major, however she had been a bit more vocal recently and been in and out of the nest box with not much product. maybe she was egg bound? she was absolutely normal really yesterday, scratching about and eating treats and patrolling the garden with her best friend Peggy-Sue. the only thing she had been doing recently was gasping a bit (i took this to be the heat) and making a more croaky noise every now and then, but again i think this was the heat. they had all been wormed very recently. i feel really disheartened with it all now, my favourite has died and i feel awful and like i shouldve known, even though everyone has said i shouldnt feel like this. Clementine is constantly broody, off and on, laying for a week at most and then going back again. she has been in the anti broody cage off and on for 2 weeks now and although i let her out to give Peggy-Sue some company i think she is going to be heading back into the broody cage tomorrow else she is also in danger of succumbing to the heat due to not drinking enough. sorry for the sob story but i knew you lot on here would understand

redsunset
So sorry. I do understand as out of my first chickens my two favourites were killed by a collie that same winter, and was heartbroken. Still dread the day I get a natural death.
gavclojak
Oh bless poor you and how sweet of your OH to try to protect you. Redsunset lost some to collies and I have read she doesn't have foxes on her island, we worry about foxes and just about everything else but I think sometimes there is no answer, it is just one of those things. I am sure you have given her the best life possible and at least she wasn't ill and down for days before, it sounds like it was quick which is all you can hope for.. X ps....I wouldn't know a prolapse from a ford fiesta....how have mine survived the last seven weeks....?????

X ps....I wouldn't know a prolapse from a ford fiesta....how have mine survived the last seven weeks....????? there are so many things to worry about arent there, though generally i was thinking that chickens are fairly low maintenance (except my broody one!!). Lola's back end just looked a little bit more out than in if you see what i mean, like chicken piles! i think prolapses can be a lot worse though (like a lot more out than in) so you would probably notice it straight away if it was a full prolapse and i think you can try to treat it so not necessarily the end, this is why im not sure that was the reason really. she was very fluffy so im now wondering whether she just couldnt take the heat. this forum is great for advice and comfort when things go wrong! poor Lola, i got pure breeds because they usually live longer but she was only with me for 8 months... mimi5
Ah poor you, only just read this Losing your first and favourite is very hard. But I know that she had a fab time with you and her hen buddies!!!!! Also better a natural death at home (though of course it's distressing for you! ) I have lost a few in the nearly 2 years and really they are a mystery sometimes As long as we do our best and their days are happy, filled with scratching about, dustbaths, a few treats etc..........what more could a chicken want!!! RIP Lola

mollyripkim
I'm really sorry to hear you lost Lola, it's always so hard but I'm sure she had a lovely life and at least it was quick and she didn't suffer. I know it can be tough at times but hopefully the good times will outweigh the bad for you.

Miggy
FYI, Sorry to hear about Lola. I picked up on the going into the coop and not laying. We have had a similar symptom in Mrs Doyle. She looked healthy enough but would go into the coop 3 or 4 times a day but not lay. What we had missed was peritonitis and we nearly lost her. coco
So sorry, RIP Lola. I lost my red silkie Poppy a few months back to what I can only put down to a mild prolapse. She had come out of the house in the morning fine but I found her dead in the run about an hour later. The only thing I could find wrong was a very slight prolapse, I think she had only just died when I found her. I did wonder if she could have had a heart attack as there were no other signs apart from her back end.
