Hooray for the NHS - Embarassing moment......

Recommended Posts

In response to OH's symptoms, I checked out the NHS website and consequently dialed 111.

In response to the 111 operators instructions, I gave OH an asprin and waited, lights ablaizing, for the ambulance she had called

Soon afterwards, blue lights flashing, A paramedic arrived (looking like he had been beaten up, bruises, plasters and a black eye..... :? ) in his estate car.

Half way through questions, tests and a variety of prodding and poking, 2 more paramedics appeared in the bedroom (let in by DD & DS).

After discussion, it was considered wise to ferry OH to hospital.

3 paramedics

2 nurses

1 trainee nurse

1 A&E Consultant

1 porter

1 radiographer

? lab technicians

1 drip

2 lots of IV drugs

3 different reading from heart monitor

several blood pressure readings

1 x ray

1 blood test later......................................

OH was sent home, with INDIGESTION!!!:oops::oops:

I would just like to say, the NHS are AMAZING. So kind, dedicated, professional and thorough. So thank you to all you Omlet people who work for the NHS under such difficult circumstances and sorry to waste your time.

You didn't waste their time, heart problems and indigestion can feel very similar. Also if he should experience the symptoms again don't feel bad about doing the same thing again, your health is the most precious thing.

I have to agree that we are so lucky to have the NHS in this country, my parents have both received excellent emergency treatment several times over the past 10 years and we are eternally grateful. Emergency treatment is where the system excels ongoing care is where the difficulties arise, but this is where families come into their own.

Agreed - you didn't waste their time at all. I always say better safe than sorry, and you did the right thing by calling the non emergency number.

I agree that the NHS is a great institution. People are very quick to knock it, but I think we are incredibly fortunate to have such a wonderful health service in this country.

I had similar incident when in Florida, add in overnight stay, echo and stress echo several blood tests to be told indigestion, also bill for 25,000 dollars :( which insurance refused to pay :(:(:( as I had indigestion previously and hadn't declared it when booking insurance.long story short they paid in end :D The NHS in my opinion is excellent and in our experience always been there when we have needed it .Yes you might wait a bit for appointments but I think on the whole it is wonderful.

You definitely didn't waste their time.

Many years ago my dad went to the doctor with chest pains which were diagnosed as indigestion.

An hour later he was dead from a heart attack

As other have said - much better safe than sorry!

That is so very sad. I am so sorry Merlina xx

I did just want to add that when our daughter was a tiny baby we had to call the doctor out in the middle of the night. It so happened that she had colic, so not much in the scheme of things, but we apologised to the doctor for wasting his time and he said he would much rather see a well baby than an ill baby that needed to go to hospital.

Our little monkey (6 months) was causing me some concern - so 111 and then an out of hours appointment with a GP, for them to say actually all fine - and the GP was lovely! She said her favourite patient is a well baby, and I had done the right thing etc. Thank God for NHS where we can be cautious about seeing a doctor, without worrying about the cost.

I agree, NHS staff (or at least the vast majority!) are amazing.

As an NHS nurse that really made me want to cry. So glad you had a happy ending Janiepie and I was going to say indigestion is often mistaken for a heart attack as Merlinas sad story told us. Please write to the Daily Wail and tell them this story cos they hate NHS staff in any form especially nurses which makes me  . Yes it can fail us but 9/10 it comes up trumps. Just one question did your paramedic get his bruises in his job or when off duty - am intrigued. Ali x

Soapdragon - the number of little people who are at "deaths door" at home and as soon as they get in the GP surgery - they are turbopowered - been there and see it everyday. But the one time you dont want to bother GP is the time you should. I firmly believe in "mums intuition" - a good mum knows her child.

That's my ED. Bless her.

Was kind of a relief to hear the GP confirm (another) chest infection...

Not entirely sure how he sustained his injuries. I did comment on his bruises and grazes when he arrived and he seemed about to explain , but then thought better of it. I thought he looked like he had been in a fight and OH thought he might have fallen off a bike. We'll never know...........

Another part of the story was quite funny. Before I called 111, I tried to phone our GP. I asked for an emergency appointment and described OH's symptoms in great detail. There was a bit of a pause, before the young lady enquired.... "What is his room number?......."

Ah, I replied, is this the GP surgery?

"No", " This is the Sheraton Skyline Hotel"!!:oops::lol:

I echo this story, my Mum was rushed in with chest pains, was given ingestion relief and it turned out she had had a heart attack, she died 3 months later following complications as her heart was damaged due to the original misdiagnosed heart attack. They didn't take it seriously with her as she was only 46, had they have taken it seriously who knows what would have happened.

So you didn't waste their time.

I work for the NHS, and agree it can be a thankless task with insufficient resources but people only need to see how things work in America to feel blessed that we do have the NHS warts and all!

Space chick that is so sad. I agree we are snowed under - its all targets and money now and as an older nurse I trained when we still cared about the patient. We are totally demoralised by the media painting us all as Beverley Allitts or . Harold Shipmans. I actually had a woman imply I was like Dr Shipman purely because she didnt get her own way. Stories like these here give us hope. The paramedics are brilliant - pure lad probably got his injuries in his line of work. The story about ringing the hotel is funny. So glad you had a happy ending.
