clucker1
Should my rhubarb Victoria be showing by now? Can't see it at all, hope it hasn't faded away. It would be 4 years old this year.
sjp
it should be coming up about now I find it's a bit later than Timperely Early I wouldn't have thought you've lost it unless it got water logged over the winter or the chucks got to it
Eggasperated
All my varieties of Rhubarb are up and I'm sure I've got Victoria amongst them, did you put a mulch over it in the winter? I think you can kill it by covering the buds with too heavy a mulch.

Valkyrie
Mine has tried to flower again. It didn't do it last year but ever since we've had it, it tries to flower and I keep removing the stem. As a result the rest of the leaves do nothing and then disappear yet again. So frustrating!
chickencam
Our large rhubarb patch flowers early every year, we removed the stems the first year and the rest of the leaves just collapsed and dried up. Ever since we have just left the flower stems and the rhubarb has gone from strength to strength.
Valkyrie
Hmm tried that too and lost the whole plant! I have bought a new very healthy looking plant which I need to pop in somewhere! At the same time the few stems and leaves on the old plant seem to look OK for the time being. A watch this space moment I think!!!
sjp
I remove the flower bud as soon as I find it and have not any problems yet but that said we never used to get flowers on Rhubarb this early in the season or at all most years until about 5 or 6 years ago unless the Rhubarb was raised from seed that is
chickencam
It is weird we have only had rhubarb flowers for the past 6 or so years too, our main patch looks like an enormous triffid patch it is huge with loads of flowers, it is the envy of the allotment site, we also have a smaller red variety that is getting huge now too, the rhubarb fairies obviously like us. Beantree
As far as I know you are supposed to dig up Rhubarb every three years, cut the root in half with a spade. Discard, sell or give-away one half and replant the other. Some leave the half root exposed to get a frost before replanting. If the plant gives flowers the dividing should have been the previous year.
chickencam
Ours started doing this after it's last division, we haven't moved it since and the other patch was only moved two years ago.
