First day

Recommended Posts

Well, here we go:

eglu, chickens and George arrived today.

Everything went smoothly and then he was gone and I was left the sole person in charge of three chickens.

I've identified them as, "Big comb", "Middle comb" and "Tiny comb". :)

Big and Medium comb are vieing for leadership.

Tiny (or chicken little) is running around as if the sky is going to fall.

My neighbours are really interested (could eggs be the reason?)

Anyway, the hens survived everything from my neighbours car backfiring. He's got a japanese import hot rod with loads of add-ons. (Loud) to a vicious attack by a cat, Not really, the cat was just curious and chicken little got into a right flap!!!!

So, on to bed time..............

The ladies had explored every square inch of their cage and were now looking to roost.

They looked longingly at the bushes in the garden, I could see them thinking: "Oooh that's a lovely bush, it's mine, mine!

Strangely enough it was chicken little, the little nervous one who went into the main coop first.

Followed after about 10 minutes by Middle comb, but big, dominant comb was not about to go into the coop until it was checked out by health and safety, the bomb squad and the NHS.

I even put a torch inside to entice them/her in.

She would not go in!!

It was now officially dark and she still wouldn't go in.

Drastic tactics were called for: There she was in the doorway. Gate opened, sneak in......and push! Get in there!

Gate shut and I can now go back indoors.

What a great way to end a day.

Welcome to the forum and the world of chickens.

Your post reminded me of our first day, very similar to you a (purple eglu) , a GNR and a PP all arrived with the lolley Omlet man. We also got 2 more hybrids locally.

What breeds are they, our Gingernut called Henny Penny was one of our friendliest chooks, I always say she taught me what I know about chickens :D

Enjoy your chooks, I wonder when you will get your first eggs.

As others have said, a lovely post to read! And you were lucky it was only the one who was reluctant to go in on the first night - usually they all need a bit of encouragement (shining torch, pushing etc). Someone told me that the 'top chook' always goes in last and others have said they go in first - so not sure of significance of the order. We found with ours that the one we originally thought would be lowest in the pecking order in the end turned out to be the brightest cookie and top chook.

Hello and welcome from me too.

I guess your chooks first day was in some sunny weather ?

Ours arrived in the snow and wouldn't go up the ladder. I scrabbled around for ages in the cold trying to get them in.

In the end I had a lightbulb moment and popped them all in through the back of the cube

They are lovely pets to have and provide endless entertainment as well as an excuse to buy stuff - usually for them but sometimes yourself :D

Have fun with them and let us know when you get your first egg :D
