KeymerKim
I had a new style Glug with my cube when it was delivered on 2nd July. I initially thought they were a brilliant design and the chickens seemed to use it without any problems at all. However, since I have lived with it for just over six weeks now, I'm starting to change my mind. They are big - great coz there's plenty of water for the girls. However, trying to get one off the side of the run is a nightmare. Like any receptacle, they need cleaning and you can't always wait until they are nearly empty. The clips at the back are extremely tight to fit through the wire bars and it is definately a two person job to remove - one to push the clips through the wire and one (with very big arm muscles) to reach through the door to hold it and try and bring it out without tipping it all over the inside of the run. The one time I tried it on my own, I ripped my thumbnail back trying to push the clips through (my language was colourful!). I have had to snip away the wire above the clips so there is a bigger space through which to pull the clips away. This still leaves the effort of carrying the glug out through the door with one hand (unless you crawl inside the run), but at least you're not having to pull the clips away at the same time. I am thinking about buying a water hopper for the girls that I'll keep in the run as it seems to be an easier option. I'm sorry to put a damper on something that is obviously very close to being a fabulous design - it's just not quite there yet. I do however, want to finish on a positive note to say that I think the Cube is a fabulous item and I'm so pleased that I went for it. My only problem now is that I want more chooks!! KeymerKim PS - sorry I've gone on a bit - it's Wine Time and this tends to happen!!
moochoo
My cube was delivered on Tuesday and my Superglug is one of the newly modified ones. The clip on the back are the same as the ones on the Grub. It's very easy to put on and lift off and there does not appear to be any leakage around the clips which was another teathing problem. Maybe a talk to Omlet is in order and see if they'll replace it for you at some point.
The Dogmother
I do know that they had to re-work the clips Kim (see Sarah's post above). I played with one of the first ones at one of the shows and it was blumming hard to get it on and off the run. I suggest that you call Omlet and ask for a replacement. KeymerKim
Thanks very much both - I hadn't thought of that (Doh!). I may just give them a call. Have a good afternoon.
craftyhunnypie
Mine has clips the same as the grub & glug, but it was awkward to put on, it just needed a bit of plastic shaving off it - a bit too much in the crevice that has to hook on the run. The girls don't use it much, they prefer their water hopper. But it's early days yet. It holds loads tho, which is handy in the summer. & with hanging it higher up - it doesn't get full of dirt & aubiose!!!!! Love my cube! clucky1
Must say I have had the same problem. Can't get water container on and off and I need muscles like arney to support it. Also seal of clip is partially split so will soon probably break from weight of water. Also my chickens have not got to grips with drinking from it - I know they are meant to be attracted to red (colour of droppers) but they don't seem to know what to do. have resorted to a floor water dispenser which they have got the hang of. Omlet have said that they will change for a new one so hopefully this may be better. Overal I still think cube is great.
bronze
I'll let you know when I get mine
urbanchick
I've finally admitted defeat to my glug. I have had enough. I have injured my fingers too many times trying to get it off the run. Last night I shaved off a fair bit from the hooks, so much that I broke through the plastic and there are small holes in it now, and it STILL doesn't fit without forcing it. To get it off the run comfortably I need to be able to hold it both sides of the run and my arms don't reach to do this and I have to do it by pushing it through from the outside and trying to hold onto it at the same time (which is where my fingers get pulled off). My Miss Pepperpot perches on it and poos into it and I get dead flies in it, so it needs a cover. I have tried sooo hard to like it, but after 6 weeks I am fed up. I've asked Omlet for a solution, and I will get an old style glug if necessary. I was one of the first to receive them, so it's one of the early ones. Have they made changes since? The Dogmother
I'm not sure when they made the changes redchick; you'd need to speak to Johannes at the Omlet mothership about that. A friend has received one recently and I understand that it fits fine. I hope that Omlet sorts it out for you.
craftyhunnypie
My chickens aren't fussed on the new drinker - they just prefer their hopper. I'm tempted to order an orange normal glug from the Omlet shop as they are not getting on with the new drinker. My chooks like to dunk their beaks & Blanche likes to dunk her head in too, so drinking from little metal tips doesn't do it for them! I was hoping they'd like it as it holds tons more water, but I'm afraid the new glug is a no no! Emma.x
Rabbieboy
I was trying to figure out a way of making fitting the new glug easier and as a quick fix for the moment I have hung it above the door of the run. It means you dont have to stretch in to try and hook it on and it clips off easier as you can push the hooks from outside.
Roxanne
That is a brilliant idea - hanging it above the door - I have put it beside the door but the hooks fit so tight into the mesh it is still hard to release to clean and change the water. I have suggested (in another reply) that a high door be made in the run to lift it out to empty and clean it, as it has a ready made handle on the top. feemcg
I'm still hoping to get a new glug and try it out - I doubt the big girls will like it ,but thought it might be good for chicks. Some of the big breeders have a nipple drinking system in their hatcheries and it would be safer as they couldn't fall in and drown (I don't give them a glug until they're about 8 weeks for this reason). OH would need to make a bracket thingie to hang it from though
Gallina
It's no good: I thought I had got over not having the new Glug, but now I want one just so that I can join in the complaints. When the new Glug was initially advertised at the time the Cube was launched, it was going to fillable by a hose from the outside, so you wouldn't have to keep taking it down: but this idea was soon abandoned. It's a pity, as that would have been convenient. And I don't know what was wrong with the new Grub, but it must have been bad, because it was abandoned altogether! The Dogmother
Having seen one of the new glugs, I'd have thought that you could fill it from the outside, through the mesh... like we do with the current glug.
Helen&Lee
We have one of each - the new style came with the cube on Monday and I'd ordered another set which was the old stlye one. While they seem to be using both it has occured to me that when it freezes in the winter those nipples on the new style glug may freeze and not 'push up' - if you get what I mean! We can only wait and see - but it has made me quite pleased I've got one of each Helen
The Dogmother
Frozen nipples.....? Sounds painful! My glug sometimes freezes solid if it's very cold!
MaggieMcHen
Ouch! I shall keep watch when 'winter' comes.
The Dogmother
If it's very cold, then I take the glug in overnight so that it's ice free and the water is warmer for them.
