Coolz
Me again... Sorry! So I was looking on you tube re: applying mite/louse powder etc and the best way to do it. All the videos showed them applying it to the vent area only. Is this the right approach? I know from what I have read that they tend to concentrate at the vent area but assumed it didn't limit them to that area. Is this how you guys apply yours? I just wanted to be fully prepared as I can be for when the time comes and I need to use it. (PS I should add I checked them when we got them and they were all clear - skin and feathers were very healthy.. I just wanted to be a bit "prepped" as it were)
Ain't Nobody Here
I usually do it round the vent and under the wings .
Grandmashazzie
Me too,and liberally in nest box.I do it every few weeks, I have never seen lice but have had red mite in coop.
Coolz
Thanks guys That's really helpful. I was going to 'powder' them at the weekend when they're free-ranging. We've also re-named Meg as she's now established herself as boss so she's now Pandora. Poor Nuggets has gone to the bottom
flowerpots
I use and DE and add it to any new bedding and puff the hens with it every now and then. xxx
Blackrocksrock
I just do the bedding every week.
Coolz
Thanks guys I managed to poof their botties and put some in the nest box after I'd changed the bedding. I think next weekend I might look at a little poofing under the wings but I'm trying not to handle them too much for fear of stressing them. Have to say, Nuggets is a dream to handle. As soon as she's in my arms she's just so docile and curious looking at everything from a glorious height. She wasn't too keen on her bum being poofed etc but she soon settled down. I also found it's quite good to find out who's laying the eggs. After their bottoms had greyed out, I looked this morning and found Nuggets had laid during the night and Pandora. Both had little white botties!
The Dogmother
I don't use powder any more; I use a spot-on and spary as recommended by my vet. NB it isn't licensed for use on poultry in the UK. Please note that it you are using DE, or another powder which uses DE as a vehicle, then please be careful to wear a breathing mask.
Coolz
Thanks Dogmother, yes it's DE we use. Luckily I had a mask I got for prepping fossils so have bought a new one for that and used the old one for the house spraying or nest poofing! Wasn't sure if I was over-reacting but I didn't want that stuff in my nose!
The Dogmother
It can cause some serious lung conditions if inhaled, so take care.
Coolz
Ah! Thank goodness for my mask then!!
sew-1
oh dear, that's stressed me out! I went to town with diatom this weekend and did 5 hutches, no mask! that would explain my tight chest and cough then!
The Dogmother
Yes, you do have to be careful with it.
Coolz
Ha - 4 months later (!). I'm glad I invested in a mask. The other day the wind blew right as I blasted the nest box and it all went in my face. Science bless face masks! I've got the mite powder down to a tee now. The girls arent fond of the bottom rubs and the wing checks but then they spot the mealworms on my knee so start nibbling whilsy I'm checking their nether regions!
