AndyRoo
Hello By any chance does anyone happen to speak Irish? Anyone know who to pronounce Scáthanna? I've been told both Skaw-hun-uh and Skaw-ha-nah. Any idea which is right? Any other suggestions? Cheers, Andy
Grandmashazzie
I think it is Skaw un nah the h being silent. Means of the shadows.
soapdragon
I think it is Skaw un nah the h being silent. Means of the shadows. Yup...I think that's correct!
Alis girls
Only Irish I know is begorrah. Not sure of spelling. Not much help am I?
Luvachicken
I'm no use at all as I thought you meant some speakers that connect to a stereo
AndyRoo
I think it is Skaw un nah the h being silent. Means of the shadows. Haha, it's funny - out of every single one of my Irish friends, they have all pronounced it slightly differently, and they have all told me to emphasise different parts of the word! D'oh. I knew it meant shadows, but I am absolutely hopeless with gaelic/celtic language pronunciation. And this is from someone who can speak (albeit not very much) Hungarian and Slovak! soapdragon
I think that pronunciation is regional with different 'areas' using very slightly different inflections!
Valkyrie
Drink, girls and feck (which apparently is a number and not rude although it's a good one to use as it's quite innocent and probably why it's used instead of something else - I've seen the counting programme - a Gaelic singalong for children!). And an assortment of names that are spelt totally different from the sound - like Naimh and Sioban.
AndyRoo
I love Irish names. I think one of my favourites is: Saoirse, which is pronounced Seer-shur. I always think "how the hell did you get that from that?"
Alis girls
I thought feck was rude. Mrs Brown always says it with off after it I had an Irish friend who used it a lot too, we nursed together and it was feck this that and the other. It's no more offensive than 'oh, "Ooops, word censored!"!' - at least that's what my friend told me!
Valkyrie
Definitely safe to use - otherwise there would be queues outside the confessionals and going down the roads!!!! The priests would get such a headache!
patsylabrador
Sometimes I don't read a thread until it gets a bit longer and when I do it's quite funny even though that wasn't intended. This is funny and who is Mrs Brown who may or may not be a bit sweary.

Alis girls
It does sound better than the other word. I used to crack up at my friend.
