Cinnamon
Can anyone recommend a good anti virus software for me? I have always used Norton, but we have had really big problems with it of late (Norton Internet Security), & I have got fed up & removed it from the computer. So, I need something else....& quickly too I run on Windows XP, & don't need a Firewall, as there is already one on the machine. Thanks in advance
Joojoo
AVG is a free download off the net and I've always found it very good. I know loads of people that use it, you just need to make sure that you've got automatic update selected so that it keeps up to date with new viruses. http://free.grisoft.com/ You can download the separate spyware versions too x
chocchick
If you moved to Linux it would be unusual to have software or virus problems at all. You can have a computer running both Windows and Linux (dual boot). OH the computer bod says McCaffey is good (sp?!) for Windows.
Cinnamon
I am going to try the AVG - thats what Christian recommended the other day I think. Right - this download will take an age on my dial-up, but if I don't start,I will never finish Edited October 13, 2007 by Guest

Guest
I, and all my family, use AVG and have done for years. I have had no problems at all. It is set to update every day. I'd recommend it to anyone.
ubereglu
We use AVG and have had no problems since the computer was sorted out!
Cinnamon
*sobs* It would be so much easier with Broadband. I have lost connection & had to restart twice now
ubereglu
I know that feeling Sarah, how about just leaving the computer to load it and go and do something else! It's what I do with our rubbish dial-up connection!

I've had Norton in the past and it always caused me hassle, interfereing with the way things ran etc. So I'd go with AVG anytime - especially as its free! Joojoo
*sobs*It would be so much easier with Broadband. I have lost connection & had to restart twice now If you are struggling to download it, ask a friend to do it with broadband, then stick it on a CD or pen drive (memory stick). The you can load it from there.

I have tried 6 times now & never got over 48% I am happy to pay for the CD,postage etc, & will be forever in your debt.......
Joojoo
I can do it for you if you like. It shouldn't cost much to post and got loads of cds so don't worry about that pm me with your address
Joojoo
Just a thought to save you some time, but do any of your daughters' friends have broadband cos it shouldn't take long to download it and then they can drop it onto a cd and it's done
beach chick
we use spybot and adaware - both free to download, both very good. HATE having computer probs!
Guest
I run adaware too - as well as AVG. It just occasionally picks up a few things that AVG missed.
redfrock
we use ad-aware, spybot search & destroy & AVG. All free and recommended by my computer geek of a friend We had norton & zone labs & I removed both last week as our computers kept having problems with the CPU maxing out and crashing the system. The only problems we are having now is with Windows media player. It keeps crashing whenever we try to rip our cds or when I try to load music onto my Philips Go-gear. We have reversed back from 11 to 10 but the problem remains (things were always fine on 10). We have uninstalled & re-installed but again no joy. So if anyone has any ideas ..... (sorry to hijack this thread- it just reminded me!)
Geoid
I like Avast! Anti Virus. It is very customisable. do you stilll need that cd?
Cinnamon
Thanks, Joojoo has kindly offered to make one up for me. What a star!!!
Geoid
Cinnamon, if your dial up is annoying you, I think you can get 2 dial up connections and link them together to form one. (but you will need 2 diffrent phone lines) It should made for faster browsing and downloading, but it is a bit pricey.
Cinnamon
Thanks Fred, I will look into it Just a second phone line into the house would be helpful, if only to still have the use of the phone whilst online
Egluntyne
Have you looked at ...THIS... Cinnamon. We had it a few years ago before Broadband come Oop North. It did made a difference. Works out at £2 per month.
Cinnamon
Thanks Egluntine, we have that already. It does make a difference to speeds........if only it prevented the dial-up cutting out too
ChookieCaz
What a pity you are not trying to get anti-virus software on a laptop as you would be welcome to come here to download it. My dial-up service became unusable, hence trying Broadband. BT give Norton Anti-virus and other cover as part of their service, otherwise I would still be using AVG which is loaded on my Mum's laptop and being borrowed by one of my daughters. I have had Norton Internet Security, but I wasn't impressed when the problem with my computer was caused by one of their known issues! As people who know lots about computers have recommended AVG, I didn't mind the engineer who was sorting mine out removing the expensive Norton software and downloading AVG. Anyway, I didn't have any problems with it (other than knowing how to disable it), so when I needed a new computer, I was so pleased that the company who built it for me had put AVG on already! How can I express properly how pleased I was? Anyway, I would be inclined to recommend AVG, especially as my experience with it has been good. Couperman
I use F-Secure it comes with a firewall, spam filter, spyware and virus detection it costs about £30 a year for a 3 machine license and I have been very impressed with it. Having said that I am about to give Microsoft the heave ho in favour of Linux (Ubuntu distro) I have been trying it for the last six months and I really like it. I rarely log onto Windows now as I find it sooooo annoying. Kev.
