Paola
Well done for not deleting Ginette I usually throw everything in my salads, like boiled egg, new potatoes, tuna, spring onion, lovely sweet plum tomatoes, mozzarella (I do love salads). If you have too much of one ingredient, why not make a second salad to take to work. Pizza Express also does a lovely low fat version of the lovely house dressing. OH calls me the microwave queen I am soooo bad at cooking Oooooo, I have just remembered, Lea & Perrins do a gorgeous 5-minute Thai coconut and lime marinade, which I usually use on skinless and boneless salmon. I now cannot eat salmon without it It tastes lovely on a bed of wild rocket
The Dogmother
That sounds divine Paola My downfall is cheese - I just love organic brie and have just eaten a whole one because I'm tired and wanted 'something nice'
Lesley
Or half a goat's cheese doesn't seem enough so I put a bit more on. Then there's only a little left, so I eat that as well. Then the half for another day is completely gone! I'm being a bit more open and honest here than I usually am. In fact I don't talk about my bad eating habits or my weight to anyone. This is scaring me and I'm tempted to delete this before posting! But I'm not going to because I believe I can't be the only person like this and I also want to change. I like healthy food and enjoy it, so why do I always end up with cheese on toast? Oh Ginette! that is just so familiar And 1/3 of an avocado is fine for one day but the next day it is starting to go brown and won't last for the third day so i eat 2/3 the second day You're definitely not alone. Guest
That's a relief then. I'm not totally weird! I would love to get into the mindset of those who aren't tempted like that. I need to adopt their way of thinking!

Guest
You mean like Carl and his "No thank you, I'm not hungry" Yes, exactly! What a concept! And Trish, why shouldn't our mouths enjoy pleasure even if the stomach doesn't need it?
Lesley
You mean like Carl and his "No thank you, I'm not hungry" Yes, exactly! What a concept! hhmmmmm yes, but totally alien to me When we met, he didn't eat desserts or chocolate. Instead of me learning his good habits, he has learned my bad habits but only in a minor way My stomach can be full to groaning but if my head says 'pudding' then pudding it will be
AnnieP
I am so pleased to be reading this. I think a lot of it is the way you are brought up. My mother was a terible cook and we used to hate her meals: always burnt or dry. We were made to eat everything, even if you were full. Now I am solely responsible for my own food I have adapted this mindset to : I will always eat lovely food (in my case that is carbohydrate: Bread, pasta, potatoes etc) and eat all of it, as it is wrong to leave any. I know you are supposed to put less on your plate, or have a smaller plate, but that really annoys me and puts me in a bad mood! I feel I am being ripped off! I also have the inability to say "no thanks". I just can't do it. My other problem is alcohol . I drink at least a half bottle of red wine a night. This is going to stop mid week, and Jonnie has agreed to jump on the bandwaggon with me for this, which will certainly help. Last year I gave alcohol up entirely for Lent, so I am sure I can do this. I made a decision about 8 weeks ago that I was going to try to eat a little less, and exercise more. I hate exercise, but I am not prepared to give up food. I will never diet again, they don't work for me. Of course Christmas has intervened. No exercise and LOTS of food. Haven't got on the scales yet. I'm not going to for a couple of weeks, and hopefully it will have all evened out. In the meantime, I have got a personal trainer for an hour on Mondays and a Pilates class on Tuesdays. They both re-start next week My goal for this year is to loose a stone and a half over the year and get fitter. I feel like a blob at the moment. So come on, what are you aiming for and how can we support eachother?
Guest
I read a book some time ago which I think was called 'Lighter Life'. It sought to get rid of the attitude a lot of us have - 'I can't eat that sort of thing' and the guilt attached if we do. The man was teaching that we can eat whatever we want to eat and however much we want of it - but also trying to teach us to ask ourselves if we REALLy want it/ are we REALLY hungry? It was good thinking and I might try to revisit it. Going back to the 'no thank you, I'm not hungry', why can't I take a chocolate/biscuit etc and save it for later? Why do I always have to eat it now? I'll eat chocolates while I'm cooking a big Sunday lunch, rather than save them for afterwards!
The Dogmother
I think it must be predominantly a female thing as Phil does the same as Carl and Jonnie with the 'not being hungry' thing. Me.. I can eat all the time more or less. Hence polishing off a whole wedge of organic brie last night while I was making Rosie's packed lunch It was just soooooo nice you see I know that I'm tidgy, but being small extra pounds show up quickly. I am well aware that I'm not as fit as I used to be, and that there's a wobbly bit between mid-thigh and boobs! That HAS to go, and I want to be fit again; I am going to try only eating when I'm hungry. Phil does this and he's as lean as they come He insists that hunger pangs are a good thing and make him feel like he is burning up fat. I just want to eat more healthily and when I'm hungry. You are just like me,Annie I love a glass of wine (or 2) in the evening & find it really easy to get through half a bottle. I know this is why I am overweight, & I know that if I stopped drinking these empty calories the weight loss would follow. But I find it really, really hard to do I have got some very small wine glasses, & am now drinking just one of those instead of 2 big'uns. I eat a reasonably healthy diet, but also find that wine weakens my resolve & I get stuck into mince pies of cheese late at night Stupid,eh? Louise
Wine and cheese are my problem areas too I know I need to lose quite a bit of weight and the plan for this year is to try and do more exercise but hidden exercise I am looking into getting a dog both for company and to give me a reason to go out and walk I feel a complete idiot out walking on my own and a dog would solve that it would also be better company than the cats as it won't just pile onto the sofa with the cats and go to sleep
Guest
I am definitely going to give up alcohol during the week. Between us we both got through a bottle of wine every night A few weeks before christmas we stopped drinking during the week and it definitely helped us lose a little weight. We also felt better and clearer headed the next day I had the Hugh FW family cook book for christmas and it was really great. Jules made some butter and bread and Harry made biscuits. Jules also helped make pizzas for tea

AnnieP
Hmm.. not so sure about that one Claret! We have decided to drink something else instead... to kid ourselves that we are having something "nice". Innocent smoothies mostly, and they work out more expensive than wine! Guest
At least that's one advantage I have! I don't really like wine And it makes the lining of my nose swell up so that I can't breathe and makes me red in the face - so I don't do it. I'll drink 3 glasses of malibu neat or Baileys on the trot though, but fortunately they cost a lot so I just don't buy them! Clare, I think that's what I was getting at. Let's eat when we're hungry. Hungry? that's a very unfamiliar feeling for me! I get quite excited when I'm hungry, it's definitely a good feeling but not one I experience very often. It's not the same as wanting something to eat!
AnnieP
Maybe that's the way to go... I am ashamed to admit this: I have just eaten 4 pieces of buttered toast, because I am going out to lunch at 1 and DON'T want to be hungry in the restaurant, as I'll eat too much! Durr. How stupid is that? As if 4 pieces of toast is good for you!

I get quite excited when I'm hungry, it's definitely a good feeling but not one I experience very often. It's not the same as wanting something to eat! Ginette that's hit the nail on the head! Now, how do we eductae our brains to recognise that? The 'nice' stuff that we want isn't what we NEED and is also empty calories that piles on the weight I read somewhere once that you can retrain your brain if you can keep up/break a habit for a certain amount of time, i just can't remember what that time period was
Guest
you're right about re-education. That's relatively easy when we're feeling positive, but then a bad day turns up and the good intentions completely disappear! DD3 did a Dance show in October and as we were leaving one afternoon, we saw one of the older and very lean girls munching her way through a bag of coleslaw mix (without the mayo). DD3 commented 'why don't I reach for something like that? Why would I always choose chocolate?' She's 11 and slim and healthy. She also naturally prefers healthy food and isn't keen on carbs, but even she could recognise the urge. I've not forgotten it since! But which of us says in the middle of an exhausting shopping trip/journey/day etc 'Oh, I'm whacked. Shall we grab a carrot or two?'
Louise
I did break the habit with chocolate I am not aware of having done it but I used to eat alot and now I rarely eat it and don't really like it that much I just used to scoff it out of habit I have a tin of sweets (unopened) in the house as Christmas leftovers and they will likely still be there next Christmas But a slab of cheddar in the fridge or a bottle of red open from the night before
Paola
Since I started slimming world last August, my attitude towards food has really changed. It is not a diet but a lifestyle. Having to go each week and be weighed also keeps my on the straight and narrow. It took me a few weeks to get my head round it but once the weight started to come off and my clothes started to feel really different, I got a real buzz. I found it a much nicer buzz then eating chocolate, cakes etc excessively. I have a terrible sweet tooth. I try and hold on to the feeling that I get when I have lost some weight and also remember what it feels like to go to bed feeling bloated and sick because I have eaten to many sweet things
