Guest
I'm a bit of a bah humbug when it comes to early decorations but each to their own- we normally put ours up the weekend before christmas - i think last year we put them up on the 23rd! However, that was when I was working full time and not at home to enjoy them anyway and too tired to bother with putting them up, might put them up on the 15th, I think that's early enough. my mum saw someone with decs up at the end of october and then there's those who leave their lights up all year round and switch them on during the festive season! what I'd like to see, in an ideal world, is everyone putting their decs up/lights out on the same day- what a show that would be! Instead of in dribs and drabs. You have to take them down on 12th night so there should be a date when you have to put them up and if it were up to me, i'd choose approx the 20th december. I do love christmas but IMO, starting it early spoils it. Nothing to look forward to if you do it too early. This is just my opinion though and I respect the wishes of those who want to drain the national grid earlier than is necessary
The Dogmother
A house a few streets away is bedecked with all the lights they can fit on it - they shorted the whole street out the year before last - they were really popular as you can imagine
Lesley
I'm just doing the trees this weekend - and they'll only have tiny lights and a star on them. I'll be making cards with Lauren and Jake on Saturday as well........ but any greenery and candles for in the house will be done on the last weekend. Guest
apropos of advent calanders, I saw the most devine wooden train in 'Taskers' and it's carriage/truck? behind it had 24 little numbered drawers to put treats in for the little ones. It was gorgeous, it was about £20 and would last for years. I think I'll try and get to Costco soon as they have lovely Christmas stuff from Stateside.... Cinnamon
We live just a short way from the infamous ASBO Christmas house, where a chap called Vic has been threatened with an asbo for causing a disturbance to his very posh neighbours. We used to go every year,& it was just amazing, but he is only allowed minimal decs these days Its been in the papers recently as he was accused of chucking paint over his neighbours gates, but was cleared in court

Cate in NZ
Buffie, have a great time with the tree decorating this evening..........will you post pics for us all? We could start another Christmas tree photo thread this year maybe Save a glug of that mulled wine for me , and turn those carols up loud I'm another that prefers personally not to kick into the Christmas decorations too early, but I think that's partly inherited behaviour (as a child my family did it all together on Christmas Eve), partly laziness since I prefer a real tree and I get so fed up of clearing away dropped needles, even from the non-drop varieties, and also partly because when the children were little school hyped them up so much in the run up to Christmas that I chose to keep them calm and non Christmassy at home until the end of term. But that's simply my choice, and I don't think there's any rights or wrongs to it, it's all about everyone doing whatever they want to make themselves feel happy and festive and whatever. My tree will go up on the evening of the last day of term. School finished, dark outside, everyone safe and snug at home with a glass of mulled wine or hot choc and we'll all fight over the positioning of our favourite baubles...........whilst Roger (the cat) does his best to undecorate as fast as we decorate. Chaos, loud, funny and completely mad I'm looking forward to it

chickencam
I love the idea of opening the chocolate tin to have a look, do you think anything would fall out? We also have some liquourice allsorts and some biscuits and 2 Christmas cakes and mincemeat and 2 puddings. I think that I had better wear dark glasses for the next few weeks We are thinking of leaving decorating the tree until the weekend before Chritmas or even Christmas eve which is when we did it when I was a child, because it will be such a long weekend. I don't think we will last that long though. I love all the twinkly lights especially the coloured ones

Charlottechicken
Ooh what a lovely thread to start getting in the Christmas mood! My tree will go up on the 21st this year, I put it up on the weekend before Christmas and take it down on 12th night. This year I have some outdoor lights (not too chavvy I hope ) they were from Wilkinsons in the January sale, and less than a fiver they are nice icicle ones, just for round the top of the porch and bay window. A few years ago my first rat climbed up the tree. She was very careful, she got halfway up before everything started jingle jangling and I realised what she was up to. She was a big girl too so she must've been careful! She ended up chewing the Christmas lights and tripping the electric, she wasn't allowed out around the decorations after that! Tessa the Duchess
Wow you are all so organised I have hardly thought about Christmas at all yet. I did go down to the cellar to hunt for the tree decs. we had a big cellar clear out in the summer and it seems we chucked them For about 20 years the thing we put at the top of the tree was a really manky felt father christmas made round a dolly peg that one of my children made at nursery school, it was very sad As it is gone I need feel no maternal guilt about getting something else....guess what I have decided on...yep I'm having a chicken on the top of my tree gonna make it myself I'm not big on decorations in the house, usually nick some holly from the local church yard and do 'tasteful' bunches here and there, always have a home made holly wreath on the front door. So what do you have on the top of your tree? Tessa

Funnily enough I don't usually do chocolate either, unlike The Hubby who is a real pig for the stuff. I do however make a once a year exception for Anton Bergs
