Guest
i need to clean my windows outside t'row and I've noticed, in most of the corners, there are some spiders sort of cocooned. Are they hibernating or is the cocoon their 'house'? Any arachnologists on here? It's weird because since we got our UPVC windows, the spiders seem to love making little cocoons in the corners. I generally just clean around them but if the cocoon is empty, I wipe the whole lot away but they're all occupied at the moment. I'm sure this never used to happen with our wooden windows. Looney
We get this too Poet. They make sort of nests to lay their eggs in too in the summer and I always feel mega guilty if I break one when cleaning the windows.....needless to say, I don't clean the windows very often, purely for the sake of the spiders you understand ! Egluntyne
There is a spider living in my kitchen in a corner. He's not hibernating.
feemcg
They can hibernate as long as they like, as far as I'm concerned

Trish
Dunno about the cocoons but they ain't hiberanting here at the mo, bless their little hairy legs they are all coming in for a warm up in front of the fire. Actually the tend to come in on the wood for the fire, but it does look like they are sitting in front of the fire toasting their many little toes
jomaxsmith
I've got several of the ones with small round bodies and long thin legs making webs round the coving but haven't seen any of the enormous ones (think they're called House Spiders) since their mating frenzy in October. Mind you, I did read somewhere that spiders are repelled by the smell of chestnuts so every conker time I chuck a few under the sofa and in other hotspots round the house and I swear we've had fewer since I've been doing that. Lesley
We've got those as well - we didn't have them at the other house They are everywhere ....... and certainly not hibernating We have the little cocoons on the outside of the windows as well - and that is on wooden window frames. Our windows haven't been cleaned since the house was built - 2 years ago, and we've lived here for 18 months of that time
Guest
i read on the net that due to milder weather, spiders (and the number of different varieties) are on the increase. Maybe that's why I'm noticing them more!? I'm sure all you arachnophobes are chuffed to bits with that info!
