Aaaw isn't Jane's chicken lovely!

That was Grub :D . Isn't she just gorgeous. I have hugged her..........largely because she likes playing with the cars on rescue days, has to check out any prospective adopters  , and I've had to rescue and redirect her more than once. She loves a hug though :D She's an ex batt who belongs to Jean Gill (BHWT Essex co-ordinator who also made a very fleeting appearance with Jane and Jamie in the end sequence :D ).

I thought that was a fabulous programme, hard hitting but it seemed honest, here's your options, make your choices. I just hope that a lot of people will have watched and will perhaps change their shopping habits as a result.

Well done Jamie, and everyone involved :clap::clap::clap::clap:

I turned over before the slaughter bit. Did Jamie rescue 150 battery chooks?

yeah  just before the credits came up it said "next day" and the caption that there were 150 birds in the studio and none of them had been returned to their cages. All released into Jamies garden :clap::clap:

Yep they are all living free in his garden. It was lovely.

I'll NEVER shop at ASDA again - although I only shop at ASDA on VERY rare occasions, apart from Morrisons it is my least favoured supermarket.

Luckily we do have Waitrose nearby and it's my supermarket of choice, not only do you get great quality food but such FANTASTIC service and self scanning from hand held scanners.

Watching that made me glad I'm a vegitarian. Mind you it also made me glad that I've eaten no product containing eggs since mid September (when I stopped eating "normal" food!)

What a great show. Well done to all involved with making this informative peice of tv. I did enjoy hughs chicken run but overall get the feeling this will do more good somehow.

Great news about helmans.

I am now doing all my supermarket at either Waitrose or Sainsburys.

Tesco and Asda can BOGOFF!!

I never stopped to think about what is in a hot dog. Urrggghhh.

Hi everyone

What an emotional chicken week it has been.

Hurrah for waitrose. I worked for them for 9 years and would not shop anywhere else. I NEVER buy meat/chicken from any other supermarket as Waitrose are the only supermarket that I can guarentee have ethics re farm animals.

I have been vegetarian for 18 years but cook meat/chicken for my family. I do eat dairy and before owning my own chooks, I always bought free range eggs. However, it had never occured to me that all the male chicks would be killed. If I did not have my own chooks, I do not think i could eat eggs now???? Makes you really think about all the 'hidden' intensively farmed eggs/chicken in products doesn't it?

I thought the programme was very good, the tone was a good mix of light and serious and I thought Jamie was excellent. We have checked our house for hidden egg products (onoly thing we had was an aldi panettone someone had got us for xmas). I have just ordered organic petfood from Pero online (after checking their organic standards to see I was happywith them) and OH has vowed not to eat anymore chicken in restaurants (the only place he eats meat)

Incidentally, does anyone know what happens to the cockerels that are born at the place that Omlet gets their hens from? I'm a bit worried that Henrietta, Sandie and Scarlett's little brothers will have been gassed or minced.

Also I never even look at the meat in the supermarkets so previously had no idea what a chicken costs- looked in Aldi (wheere I mainly shop) and the chickens there were £2.03!!!! No choice of free range either. yuk

I've had to sky+ this as I'm at work (shhhh, don't tell the boss) I'm so looking forward to watching it, I gather Waitrose and Sainsburys are OK, I've alternated between Sainsburys which is my local and Tescos who used to do my deliveries, so it sounds like I'll either be changing to Waitrose (depending on how expensive they are :? ) or sticking with Sainsburys.

But, when I've watched it I'll let you know, sounds like Tescos will be out out OUT!

There's only one Waitrose in Scotland, in a 'posh' part of Edinburgh :( - it would take me an hour to get there, so too far.

Menagerie, I think you'll find Omlet gets their hens from a large breeder where the boys are 'disposed of' as you mentioned (feel free anyone, to correct me on this).

I think the programme was absolutely excellent. Well done Jamie! :D

I know some people have said Hugh's programmes weren't so hard hitting and therefore maybe less effective, but I wonder how much ground his programmes had already prepared? Jamie's programme may not have been so effective without being preceded by Hugh's.

I take my hat of to Jamie he has the common touch and I am sure that he will have made more converts in his single programme than Hugh did in 3. I have a great deal of respect for both men who put their money where their mouths are but Hugh has an unfortunate naivety that stops him appealing to a mass audience.

Jamie was much less judgemental and more realistic in his approach towards both consumer and producer.

What an excellent week for chicken welfare it has got to have had some results :D

if only I could afford to shop at Waitrose!

I have never seen a Waitrose.

Kev

There's one in Durham City, but guess that's too far to travel for your weekly shop. Think it may be the only one in the North.

Their meat is delicious and staff are very friendly and helpful, I would also recommend a florentine from the bakery, it's the main reason I help out with the weekly shop

Totally agree, & with many other points on this topic. As KateA. said, the format & editing was good, and seemed an honest approach. (I found the sensationalism, bias & emotion detracted from the points in Hugh's, this format was much better).

I liked the broad but detailed coverage, so many questions raised & answered.

I thought it was excellent; it was right that it showed everything, that's the point, too much food production process is hidden.

Esther was supposed to go to bed before it started but then I let her watch the whole thing. Very educational, would love everyone to see it.
