Baby names...

Recommended Posts

Shona, we are really struggling with boys names. I love Stefan so much (the boy and the name!), I can't find anything that I like nearly as much.

We've been looking at names that were popular in the 50's, many of them are now seen as traditional British names, yet "Ooops, word censored!"ody tends to call their children anymore, i.e John. I think John is a lovely boys name. I haven't come across anybody naming their boys John at all. John is Stefan's middle name too.

When we say we like John, we get a really funny reaction from people. Like we must be really boring!

Our girls names were much easier to choose.

My choice of names was quite unusual at the time (they're both in their late teens now)...Bethany and Jordan (boy). I loved hippie names when I was pregnant with Bethany...on my list were, 'Rainbow', 'Autumn' and 'Sky'.

She reckons she would have loved to have been called 'Rainbow', but I don't think she would have in reality!

There aren't many male Jordans around at the mo, mostly girls, which is it bit bugging for my son!

Don't know if we ever get it spot on with naming our kiddiwinks!

I really wanted John but our surname is Smith....and that really would have been boring!

Ds1 (Toby)'s middle name is Joel while I liked it at the time of naming him, I find it quite a hard word to say so am quite glad we didn't use it for his first name. We had the same problem as you that we'd used our best, favourite name for ds1 and ds2's name (Alex) became a bit of a compromise - the one we both thought was ok. I'd have preferred Felix but dh could only think of the cat food!

We named our eldest son Lewis, after his grandfather, DH is Welsh. Our youngest son came pre-named as he was adopted at 15 months, he is named Mark. I didn't really like the name much, but the poor little s"Ooops, word censored!" had been through so much grief in his young life I just couldn't take away the only thing he had. It is a bit weird having a child that has a name not chosen by you, in retrospect I wish I had changed it, but you do the best thing at the time.

My grandson is called Frankie, which I love. My grandaughter is called Courtney which I do not like at all  I have two new grandchildren arriving later this year, I'm gritting my teeth as to what they will be named

It is so hard choosing names :? my eldest daughter who's 24 is called Melissa but if she'd have been a boy we would have called her Hadley, Daughter number two will be 22 on Tuesday and we were stuck between Lucia and Eugenie and so she's Lucia with Eugenie as her middle name.

We thought of lots of other names but you always have to think what they can be turned into by others for instance we liked Chiara but thought it would end up as Kia Ora  And I don't know about others here but I found that if I didn't like someone that had a certain name it put me right off it. Our DS Jordan is 14 and would have been Francesca if he'd been a girl, but to be honest I wish I'd gone for Hadley as Jordan is now a very common name and one which apparently strikes fear into the heart of many a teacher when they see it on the register!

Good Luck with the baby & the naming of him/her I'm sure you'll choose the perfect name

my nephew is called Jordan

My dad, his grandad calls him Gordon just to wind him up :lol:

When my youngest was at school he had a classmate called Jordon.

Due to a spot of confusion at the Registry Office....ie Dad under the affluence of incahol when registering the birth, he got his spellings confused and the registrar wrote "Gordon" down.

They tried to get it changed, but there was nothing they could do until he was 18.

I can sympathise with the dilemma of choosing a favourite name for the first born. We did that with oldest son James. Daniel was a bit tricky after that (especially as James was by then 11 and had to help choose a name - try and find a name that 3 of you like!) When son number 3 came along we were stumped. But in the end it was obvious, ending up with 3 sons when I thought I would only ever have one - it had to be Matthew, meaning 'gift of God' 8)

My children have, I suppose, slightly unusual names, not dead uncommon, but enough so that neither have encountered very many people who share their name. We then gave them traditional, popular middle names that have family relevance to us.

So, I have Sebastian Thomas (Thomas was my maiden name) and Imogen Amy (Amy was a recurrent name through hubby's family, last held bu his grandmother). I still love both names, but of course I now associate the names very strongly with my wonderful children, so I have to love them :D:D . And of course they have become abbreviated over the years to Seb & Immi

Both names are Shakespearian, old Shakey probably invented Imogen as a corruption of the Norwegian name Innogen meaning innocent maiden (or something like) for a character in Cymbeline. Sebastian is biblical, but Shakespeare used in in a couple of plays, Twelfth Night being one of them.

I was one of several Catherines during my school years although we all abbreviated our names differently, Cathy, Kate, Katie etc and I was quite envious of my sisters who had more unusual names, especially my youngest sis.......Jemima 8) . She was teased mercilessly at school about Puddleducks and Play School rag dolls  , but she loves her name now.

When I had my daughter I wanted to call her Amber (I had Amber and Jade in mind for two children........ but I was only 17  ) my husband really wanted the name Vikki. We talked about it for nearly 2 weeks while I was in the nursing home and on my last day, the Registrar called and so we decided on Vikki.

Despite discussing it with family over that time......... my father obviously waited until that evening to point out that she had the initials VD

I explained to her from an early age that she needed to use all her initials when they were required - VMD - it was strengthening and character building  I just hoped that if/when she married then it wouldn't matter.............. then, when she was in her 20s she married.......... a man with a surname beginning with 'D'

I called my son Brad - I think he quite likes it and there has never been another one that he has come across  When he was little he used to play with a boy called Brett - they always seemed to be called Brat and Bread! - I could never get the words out the right way

A girl at church, aged 34 had her first child last year when she thought she would be unable to have any at all. She called him Matthew :D

Awww Jo, that really made me laugh this morning! See, I think that's perfect. I'd have gone for it

I've just thought of another we've been mulling over.......which I think has Scottish origins (correct me if I'm wrong Shona)....Fraser.

I love Thomas as a middle name, it was my Grandad's middle name (his first, Frederick), but I'm not sure John Thomas would be appropriate?

John Frederick however......we are quite liking....thoughts?

John can't really be shortened, but I love Johnny as an extended affectionate name.

:D

One of the main problems we have with naming a boy is our surname - James. It never occurred to me when we had Duncan that it would cause confusion, until the little s"Ooops, word censored!" was 6 days old, suffering from terrible jaundice, and we were kept waiting for over 24 hours for blood test results because the lab had labelled them for 'James, Duncan', and someone, somewhere had sent the results to a James Duncan on an entirely different ward. Both our sons will now spend their lives being called James Duncan and James Owen, instead of the other way around. In fact, when we first moved to the Balalmory House last year, Caitlin was taken up to the gp's surgery for her pre-school boosters, and the nurse asked for James Caitlin, then asked which of the boys she was meant to be seeing.....:roll::roll:
