DW
Bramble's been laying for a week, but Nutmeg hasn't started (and is not even crouching yet). However, I've noticed that whenever Bramble goes in to the eglu to lay, Nutmeg goes in too. This is the only time that either of them ever go in - except to sleep, that is. Does anyone else have hens that show such sisterly togetherness? D.
Egluntyne
How sweet.....perhaps she'll get the idea from Bramble.
chelsea
funny you should bring up this topic as mine wont go in the cube together to lay. I bought the cube as it fits 3 in the nestbox at one time. but if one hen is in the nestbox and the other is waiting the waiting hen creates havoc in the garden until the nesting hen comes out to see what's happening and then the noisy hen sneaks in and nicks her spot!! mine wont share! superjules
With my first 2 hens, one would be inside laying, the other would hover round the eglu door, popping her head in every few minutes to check her buddy was ok. They were so close. It's not the same with the new ones, they are more like Chelsea's chooks now, although they do like to have a good old natter about it when they re-emerge. chelsea
Slightly along the same topic line but does anyone else's hen gather up stuff to put on their backs as they are laying?!! My maran picks up little bits of hemcore or dead grass and chucks it over her back.
hillfamily
Slightly along the same topic line but does anyone else's hen gather up stuff to put on their backs as they are laying?!! Yes my girls gather bits of straw When we had our first 2 Omlet girls, whenever Babs laid an egg, Ginger used to sit by the eglu door and chat to Babs Sadly Ginger died after 18 months and none of my later additions have ever done this

KateP
My two go into the eglu together when one of them is laying. The other one sometimes pops out for some pellets or water and then goes back in! They are really devoted to each other and hate being out of each other's sight. When they are out in the garden if one of them strays too far under the hedge the other one runs quickly under there to check on her sister! Christian
Mine often pop their heads in when one of them is laying Babs always carried small sticks on her back when she laid an egg. Aw bless.
Sarah B
Mine are not laying yet but they follow each other everywhere like glue and mimic the others actions! Goodness knows what will happen when they start laying?
Ain't Nobody Here
but they follow each other everywhere like glue and mimic the others actions! Mine do that . If one flaps her wings, the others copy. If one charges across the garden at top speed, she'll be closely followed by the others . If one's startled, they all freeze . Janty
My pekins all go back inside the eglu when Delia the Buff Orp miniature is going to lay. They stand in the eglu together and only emerge when the deed is done.
ajm200
I've only had mine for a week but they do tend to stick together. For the first few days all 5 were always together - safety in numbers maybe. Now that they are settling in they seem to have split into two groups of 'buddies'. The largest two are absolutely inseparable and even attempt to come down the cube ladder side by side - which is comical to watch The smaller 3 also stick together but they are more like the naughty kids in class and are always the first to get into any mischief. They led the great escape yesterday (see my 'oops there out photo) and tried to get into the house when I went out to return them to the run. They also use the perch that we've put into the run as a launchpad to'divebomb' their big sisters
Jules.
I call my girls sisters as they seem to do everything together. It's lovely to watch
meezers
I was going to ask the same question ! We've noticed that when Elsie goes in to lay, Lottie will go in and sit by the nestbox to keep her company. none of the others even notice and Lottie and Elsie don't seem that close otherwise - we wondered whether Elsie was giving her lessons ! Elsie does throw wood shavings over her back when she's finished, I wondered if that was a throwback to their jungle days , maybe they had to cover/hide their eggs from predators ? anyone know ?
