Faye&Ant
Morning, Im sorry if this is a really stupid question but Ive tried to find an answer and haven't had much luck. Since we are now getting eggs everyday, we give most them away and I wondered whether it is ok to write the dates on the eggs I wasn't sure if the pencil or ink from a pen did went through the shell or not? Faye&Ant
Thanks Cinnamon, I wanted to check ages ago but felt daft asking
superjules
Yep, soft pencil here, with the initial, date and weight. Even DS aged 6 can do this now, although he often attributes it to the wrong chook. And he's never sure of the date. And he sometimes forgets to let go of it while it's on the scale so gets a false reading. He tries though, bless him, and I always thank him lots for doing it. TAJ
superjules - at least your 6 yr older is trying to help - my teenager had her own names for the hens (didn't like mine) and started crossing out and replacing the name on the eggs! Cinnamon
Pencil here too - date and number total (up to 862 at the moment) Oh a total - what a super idea! Wish I had thought of that when I got my first egg a couple of years ago
hillfamily
Pencil here too - date and number total (up to 862 at the moment) Brilliant Idea.........too late to start now, although I could trawl back through my egg diaries and count how many eggs we've had over the last 3 years
Faye&Ant
That is a brill idea, I wish I had done that too. So if I start now does that mean I have start again at 1... Thanks for putting my mind at ease, I can now happily scribble on the eggs for when I give them away
Gamebird
Hello faye&ant, I'm so glad you asked that question. I was wondering about that myself and was going to ask but was waiting until my girls started to lay. So now I know the answer thanks to you. You see, some questions are not as daft as you think. Ain't Nobody Here
I have running monthly, annual and grand totals in my Egg Tally .
Chuckov
Egg records! YOu're all so organised! I think writing the egg number on is a great idea, luckily we have had less eggs than I have fingers so I don't have to think too hard about it I've been writing on in blue washable felt tip - is that OK? Fur 'n' Feathers
We've bought a felt tip pen - the kind you write on cake icing with - to do this job. Haven't tried it yet....first egg today...eaten this evening by Fur
Kermit Crew
Beware! Pencil is good enough for "home consumption" but everything else for external consumption has to be FOOD GRADE. As previously mentioned, pens for cake icing fit this bill perfectly
Ms Tilytinkle
Oooops i use a coloured pencil too, just write the date & then usually they're all eaten within a day or two. But will buy an icing pen should my neighbours want any eggs. Ms Tilly6chooksalaying
