TAJ Posted July 4, 2008 Share Posted July 4, 2008 We have been thinking about a new car, then looked at one this week in silver - we liked the car but not the colour, it also comes in black, blue and orange. When we went back to the garage a second time it seems a revised range came in in June, so this silver one is the only 'old' one left in the country. The replacement model is a lot lower spec, with no possibility to up grade. Do I: 1. Not buy anything 2. Live with the silver, with the price almost £3,000 off the RRP - it has leather seats & air con, folding heated wing mirrors. 3. Go for the new version in black, cream or burgundy, roughly the same price (£300 more), but with cloth seats and no air con. Is silver really that bad? chelsea Posted July 4, 2008 Share Posted July 4, 2008 id stick with the silver. We have a silver car, it looks classy and smart IMO. Even when they are dirty they still look attractive. Black cars are nice & hold their value. However silver cars don't seem to date. Hmm - you have to have what you really want. In my peugeot, I don't have leather seats, but I do have air con & it's brilliant. No more windows down with hair all over the place! Leather seats look nice, but to be honest I think they would be sticky in the summer & cold in the winter! By the way, my mum has the mitsubishi in orange - it's very nice! (and the rest of the year I can't cope with the petrol fumes from other cars ) ...but, it's not very fuel-efficient in these times of high fuel prices ....and also, therefore, not very environmentally friendly ....so, you could choose the colour you want and say it's because it's environmentally friendly Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Guest Posted July 4, 2008 Share Posted July 4, 2008 Personally I hate silver, used to see a lot of silver cars going round the factory - they hadn't reached the paint shop! Silver just looks unfinished to me. BUT - black cars scratch more! They just do - walk down a street and look at a few. Silver will not show scratches like black. ALSO silver is SOOO popular your resale value will be good. When I bought my new Mondeo there was the usual range of DULL colours (big cars don't come in exciting colours only small cars do!) and there were FOUR different colours of silver. I bought a plum colour that oddly you don't see many cars in, even here in Essex where ever second car is a shiny new Ford (everyone either works there or knows someone who does). Despite rarely seeing a colour match for mine on the road - there are 2 others in the car park down at the golf and country club. Odd. Leather seats are ideal if your dog goes in the car as the hairs dont stick in the seats like it does on cloth interiors and there is no smell absorbed into the material either. That's how I feel I have never had a brand new car, so never been able to 'choose' the colour. I've had a blue Panda (with a red door! ), then a greeny blue metallic (that was good as it hardly showed the dirt), a charcoal one (did show dirt a lot, perhaps because I don't think i ever washed it... ), and the only one where I actually choose the colour is my new one, a metallic cosmic yellow (posh people call it gold) with a black top which I love taking down in the summer. Whenever you buy a new car you should buy the newest model you possibly can.. the older model is ok as long as you get a really and I mean really good discount i.e. at least 5-7% When the newer model comes out the RV (residual value) of the older model will plumet, so its only worth getting if the Dealer takes this "knock" for you by discounting heavily. Other factors in keeping value in a car is the colour.. it needs to be desirable to at least 80% of all possible 2nd owners including a Dealer if you part exchange next time.. also good wheels and air con are a must! With the colour choice you have all bar the orange would be fine for re sale, silver has been the most popular colour in recent years however this years new "silver" is in fact white (which I love!) blue is very popular too although a metallic blue is the best. Personally I would go for the newer model so you are up to date and don't lose book value very quickly after buying..but thats just me! Hen Time Posted July 4, 2008 Share Posted July 4, 2008 I had this dilemma a few years ago and went for the silver (with a hint of green, but really silver!) and although every now and then I think 'it would be nice to have a red or blue or black car', the good price, plus improved spec, leather, ait con etc won the decision. Have to say don't regret the decision and I keep cars for about 6-7 years. If I had chosen a red, blue or black car, I definately would have regretted not having the air con, leather seats and the cheaper finance!! Everywhere seems to have silver models on about 10% discount but after some negotiation we manage to wangle an offer of 7% on the new one and it worked out cheaper. They are good value but we ended up having to give up the idea after finding out that the boot is too small to take the double buggies that we want. Back to the drawing board. Personally, I wouldn't worry about the colour of the paint. if it is a convertable don't get cloth seats. We got caught out in a rain shower in ours and by the time the roof was up the back seat was soaked. We have leather so it was easy to mop up, cloth seats would have got very smelly. Low spec cars they miss out something. Colour is a personnel had a Ford with Mistral Blue colour and in different lights it changed colour.A Toyota in silver and greeny/ black, a Nissan in silver, Suzuki XJ410 in red, a Suzuki Vitara in white. Rover in blue and now a Volvo in Moon Dust Silver. So varied colours really shows how colours alter as you move on throw life. Re the aircon, I recently had the car in for repairs to our aircon (which we rarely used, thinking it was wasteful of fuel). The engineer said that modern cars use technology that means this is no longer true. You're better off using the aircon than having the windows open. I'd love to think this was true ... but it's not what I keep reading on environmental websites! Anyone know whether there's anything to substantiate this? Not doubting your word, ANH - but I have not come across this claim elsewhere, and I'd be interested to know if anyone else has read or heard this. I deliberately bought a car WITHOUT air-con last year , because of the fuel consumption issue.
