gooner.girl
Just been to vets with Milo my 12 yr old (going on 13) collie x springer. Both DH and i had noticed he was panting excessively these last few months compared to normal. At first we put it down to heat, thick black coat and the fact thats he's old and a tad overweight but i took him to the vets today just to put my mind at rest. She listened to his chest, asked a few questions then said "he doesn't sound very healthy i'd like him in for xrays next week - he could have a tumour" To say i am upset is an understatement, this news would devastate me at the best of times but the last few week we have just received piece after piece of bad news and all i can think of is what if the worst happens...... AnnieP
Aw, so sorry to hear about poor Milo's troubles. Hey, try to not worry about it yet though, I know that is almost impossible, but it might not be what they are saying. In my experience, vets always say the worst possible scenario, so as to not get your hopes up. Think positive and give him loads of love and cuddles. Thinking of you
Gamebird
So sorry to hear your news. I always think the worst when there is something wrong with any of my animals. I was convinced my Labrador had leukaemia because he was drinking excessively, losing weight and generally 'not himself'. It turned out he had a virus which after 2 months disappeared and he is back to normal. It could just be that Milo has a lung infection which can be sorted. Vets these days have to look at all posibilities so they can't be accused of negligence. Good luck and keep us posted.

Seagazer
I agree that the vet is probably giving you the worst case scenario. I hope it turns out to be something else. I'll keep my fingers and toes crossed for you.

Cate in NZ
Oh, Helen, I'm so sorry to read this. I hope that there's nothing seriously wrong with Milo....vets do often like to look at worst case scenario and I truly hope that that is what's happened for you. Good luck to Milo for his visit to the vet next week.

gooner.girl
Just taken him in. He wasn't to happy about it - doesn't like the vets. Sounds like as well as x-rays he has to have an extra blood test cos he is so old and that they might do some other test like things on his lungs.... Am hoping insurance will cover it all. Took out a policy for him with 'animal friends insurance' about a month and a half ago. Never done a pet insurance claim before. Will they pay for optional extras such as the blood test they recommended he have does anyone know? When they took him away he slipped his collar and ran back to me, Hated leaving him I have to phone at 1pm to find out how its all gone/going. chelsea
When Bracken went in at the beginning of the year for blood tests and op the insurance covered everything, we just had to pay £65 excess. I dont know whether you can ask you vet, but I dont think its right that the customer has to pay the vet and then wait 6 weeks for payment from the insurer . I think the vet should collect payment from the insurer direct, we rang our insurer 4 weeks after Bracken's op and were told they hadnt received the forms from the vets, so it might pay you to ask. Try to keep yourself busy today, Im terrible when Bracken is at the vets (terrible worrier), go and clean your oven or something! He'll be fine. xx
Yorkshire Pudding
Fingers crossed for good results Helen. I'm waiting for test results for my old cat today so I know how you feel (including 'OMG I hope the insurance will cover all of this' ). Do check your policy notes - mine covers geriatric blood tests as long as they are deemed necessary by the vet - given Milo's age the insurance company should be expecting it. They don't cover the special diet that Marmite needs, but that's a small price to pay compared to the cost of all the lab tests she's had! I had to claim a couple of years ago as she had to have teeth removed thanks to unusual dentition (several teeth in the wrong places), which led to infections in her gums. Petplan were pretty good and only deducted the excess; I got a cheque back within a few weeks of the claim. I agree with Chelsea, it would be so much easier if the company could pay the vet directly - there's a good chance we'll be bankrupt before this series of treatment ends and we can put a claim in. The policy says to wait until the end of the treatment and that could cost thousands... I recommend furious housework and chocolate (in equal amounts) to keep you busy till 1 o'clock.... and the forum!
gooner.girl
Thanks guys - i hope Marmites test results come back ok. Its horrible isn't it - the waiting? The house seems so empty and quiet without Milo here. Am hoping the cats will be cuddly today! Chelse - its not THAT bad yet that i need to clean the oven!!!! gooner.girl
Went to get Milo. Good news is he doesn't appear to have a tumour though they are a bit unsure still exactly whats wrong. They saw some bronchial murmurings (think thats what they called it) and are sending his x-rays off to someone else to look at too Will hear more in a few days apparantly. Meanwhile, they have given me some tablets for him to treat bronchitis. He has a little bandage round his leg where they put the drip in and his blood pressure was so good it spurted everywhere but otherwise he seems ok (not woozy like they said he would be but still panting lots) So am not sure how worried to be or not about him now - still not sure how serious it is - great to have him home and snuggled up beside me though! ...
