ubereglu
Hiya, I was wondering if anyone had any digital camera recommendations as I'm looking to buy a good quality one soon. I'd like it to have optical zoom, 5MP, but ideally more and have about £120 to spend, plus extra for memory cards etc. Can you help, I really like the look of the Nikon and the Sony ones. Redwing
I have a Samsung one which I absolutely love, it has a range of useful settings, is user friendly and it has a big screen on the back which I looked for in particular as I didnt want one with a small screen as I would be tempted to leave poor photos cluttering the memory card 'just in case' they were better on a computer screen. I did an evening course in basic photography last year and the tutor was a professional photographer, he didnt like the Sony cameras but didnt say why! His top buy was a Panasonic Lumix camera and he said they come out top in lots of surveys (I think they start at about £125) a couple of people on the course had them they certainly seemed to be very user friendly and produced nice pics. I get all of my camera items on a website called 7dayshop (or something like that) their stuff is really cheap. I get all of my developing done by Pixum on line as the pics are far better than using the high street (if you register you get loads of good offers emailed to you over time but they dont hassle you which is nice)
Egluntyne
I remember asking this about a year ago and Cinnamon recommended a Fuji Finepix. I bought one....in pink...a Z5 and it is fab. Point and press.
Snowy
The Fuji Finepix certainly rates very highly in reviews. I bought an F30 and am delighted with it. They've since replaced it with the F31fd (about £180) and the F20 (£110). Here is a review: Finepix Review
rachel19
I have a panasonic lumix which is fab - 18x optical zoom and 8MP. It was only just over £200 but well worth it a couple of months ago. Previously I had a Kodak which I would also recommend - very reliable. Both of these worked just as well as an SLR in my opinion. On second thoughts it depends on what you want it for as to what you should get? Different ones are better for different purposes......if its just a point and click then you can't go that wrong but if you want it for more serious photography then you need to be pickier. Janty
I don't like the Nikon cameras. I have four which I use for animation with the children at school and I don't rate the picture quality. They are in the price bracket that you are looking at. I do have a Canon Ixus which is fantastic. Jessops are doing one for £160 at the moment if you could stretch that far. Ours has been through heat, minus 40 in lapland, blizzards, etc. It has been dropped, stuffed in bags and treated to rough handling by hubby and it's still going strong four years after we bought it. When it finally dies we have decided to get whatever Ixus is the top of the range and latest out at the time...it's so good. I also recomended Ixus to a friend and now he's hooked. Jan P.S. I don't own Canon shares...honest!
Cinnamon
I remember asking this about a year ago and Cinnamon recommended a Fuji Finepix. I bought one....in pink...a Z5 and it is fab. Point and press. I did, & I stand by that now. A super comera with loads of fab features, which has a high quality picture & does what you ask it to do. Its top of all the polls on digital compacts, AND comes in some very cool colours too.
Tessa the Duchess
I remember asking this about a year ago and Cinnamon recommended a Fuji Finepix. I bought one....in pink...a Z5 and it is fab. Point and press. I also bought a Fuji FinepixA820, recommended by Snowy I think. I love it, really easy to use and takes good pics. It cost £85 and the memory card was £12, got it from Amazon. Tessa
chelsea
We have a Sony Cybershot, another point and shoot with good quality pictures. It must be easy to use if I can use it!
Seagazer
We have a Panasonice Lumix too - only had it a short time. My 10 year old managed to work his way through most of the options without reading the book! On holiday we were seeing who could take the best sunset photo (it has a setting for it). Just got to get him to teach me now.

ubereglu
It depends on what you want to use it for... Well I want to use it as a basic camera really, to take good pictures of both people and landscapes etc, I'd like it to have a fast shutter speed too as it's really annoying if it's slow. Funny how you said you don't get on with Nikon's Janty as both my brother and sister have one and I really like them as theirs are really simple to use, maybe that's just the model. I especially love my sisters as you can turn the lens around so you can take pictures of yourself really easily. Have to say I'm not a fan of the look of the fuji ones...the lens is just in the wrong place.
Snowy
The Fuji does have a nice, speedy shutter response. My old Canon Ixxus was incredibly slow!
Phonix
My old camera recently got damaged in a car crash and I although I have a DSLR I wanted to replace my little camera as its not always practical to be carrying around the bigger one (nights out lol) I just went to curry's and bought this one: http://www.currys.co.uk/martprd/store/cur_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@1970708109.1221558721@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccgdadefegikjffcflgceggdhhmdgmh.0&page=Product&fm=null&sm=null&tm=null&sku=403681&category_oid= (sorry thats so long!) You can get it for less on Amazon and other websites - mine wasn't as much in store as theyr asking for online - only £99 i think! Its a fab little camera and soo easy to use (my 5year old niece has mastered it and all the black/white, change of colour, change of function buttons already) I would def recommend it!!! chickencam
We have a Fuji Finepix too, it is about 4 years old and going strong, we also bought 2 older finepix cameras for our daughters from ebay for £15 each they are only 2MP but take great photos
Snowy
Just thought of another plus point for the Fuji - the battery lasts forever! Can't remember when I last charged it up, but I've just switched it on and noticed the charge has dropped a little! I can easily take it on holiday for a fortnight and not need the charger. My old Canon needed recharging every day!
Scottie
I bought the Fujifilm Finepix something 20 (can't quite remember the code) last week and so far have been very impressed. It's 10 megapixels etc. I bought a refurbished one from the Fujifilm website and it cost £85 instead of £120. It seems to take good pics of people and places and is bright green!
