Pro - Does anyone else's nest boxes get soaked in rain?

........... have put themselves to bed, and I just go and shut the door of the run and then open the pophole to do a head count. They are all snuggled up, and when they hear me make these lovely coo-ing and murmuring noises. They sound sooo contented, it makes me feel all warm inside

I love it when I open the door to the garden and they are all hidden under the bushes, only to come legging it and falling over themselves to get to me (ie food) first! I always sing the theme to Match of the Day to myself.

When one of them finds a worm, and the others all notice, and the finder begins a mad dash around the garden, hotly pursued by the others.

 

I hum "Yakety Sax" when this happens (the theme from the famous Benny Hill chases!)

We should have an album of chicken antic theme tunes! The Benny Hill chase tune mad me laugh!

I love it when mine jump up & down on the spot to reach the flowers off the fuschia bush! I also love how the pekins fly & run at the same time!

orpingtons gallop down the garden or when bantam polands help preen each other and then clean orpington's fluffy drawers. Its also very sweet that a poland will ALWAYS accompany anybody who is going to lay an egg; just for a bit of companionship

I love it when mine take a dust bath and the others pick off bits of grit and soil from their feathers as the a covering themselves with earth, its very entertaining

Lay an egg on my hand when I'm feeling around their knickers for eggs laid by other chickens ...

when they just walk over or under each other trying to get to me and my treats .

 

They are so deliciously self centred, until they get cold and then it's "all for one and one for all". I also do the nightly head count through the egg hatch and love to see them all snuggled up and murmuring to each other.

 

Oh I forgot, I always sing the theme from "pole position" (kids tv cartoon) before I open the door in the morning as I can hear them jostling for pole postion before I open the door and they all come shooting out.

...the four big girls run like fat waddling ladies and the three banties hop skip and fly behind them.. and all just because I step out the back door!

 

.. the grown up babies sneak in big girls run and snuggle up beside their old mum whose broody again! looks so cute!

When they run towards me 'cos I've got treats, or when they think I've got treats! They skid to a halt on the patio and sometimes fall flat on their beaks! You can almost see the sparks fly as they try to brake!

 

When I'm in their run clearing poo or cleaning the elgu and they are outside, Bobbie my Barnevelder comes in to have a nose at what I'm up to - she comes right up close to me and we have a chat

... when they go so excited about some new FatDuck-esq mash concoction, standing in the bowl with the sound of the beaks tapping away, with them torn between eating it from the dish or off each other as they get covered in it - such messy eaters

Apricockerel does his "cockadoooooooooooooooo" noise - he's like Pavarotti. step back, take deep breath, throw head back, check the audience, throw head back again, take another deep breath and then give voice - to total lack of interest from the girls.

I love it, when they have been closed in over night and I go into the run with fresh brekkie, and when I open the coop door, I hear the charge of the light brigade... everyone scrambling and barrelling down the ramp to ge to breakfast..then they all jump onto the perch to let breakfast settle.... fascinating... then there is the little feet stamping thing they do when they crouch!! it's so endearing...tiny little feet hopping from one to the other..lo

I love the squatting too - and especially the feet wide, bum wiggle that accompanies it .

 

Bit mean, but I think it's hilarious how when you put some foodstuff or other in their run they scatter like you've chucked a grenade in ("ruuuuun, it's an exploding apple core " )

Sometimes I open the nesting box door instead of the run door so insted of running down the ramp they just jump the ten inches or so straight onto the ground and take off running down the garden towards their mash.

 

When they do this, they remind me of paratroopers in training so sometimes I say "One thousand, two thousand, three thousand, PULL!" to them. they take no notice.
