Some of you have expressed an interest to know how Myrtle is getting on and so I have posted before and after pictures here for you all. If you remember she is an exbat that we adopted in March of this year (before they got as scarce as wooden-horse poo).

 

Initially we were taking her every fortnight to the vets with what appeared to be a general debilitation and she continued to give us soft shelled eggs. Then we started to treat her with homeopathy and she comes indoors to have supper (porridge mash), sleeps over in the dining room and has breakfast before returning to the coop. The others do not seem to mind this at all and accept her nocturnal away days. She is the bottom of the pecking order anyway - but is so intelligent - she knows the cupboard where the corn jar is kept and pecks at it to let us know she wants some. She is a corn junkie.

I am glad to say that after much pleading by us she stopped laying 4 months ago and concentrated on producing her feathered coat. Over the past month she has given us 3 of the most beautiful porcelain white eggs (all the others range from cream to a rich dark brown). The first one was a bit like a flame shape and the rest have been like torpedos!

 

Of the 8 we adopted she appears to be the biggest. And like Bruce Forsythe - she's our favourite - not that we have favourites!

What a super job - I can't believe that people still would buy eggs from battery hens just to save thems a little bit of money - they should have pictures in the shops of these hens that would soon stop it!

 

I think I will will get ex-battery hens next time!

Wow. She's a credit to you and to the resilience of hen-kind. Someone on here said the farmers should be shot, I disagree. The Government should be shot for making the laws that allow such disgraceful treatment of animals. The public should be shot for insisiting that their food comes as cheap as possible whatever the true cost, the supermarkets should be shot for forcing the price of battery eggs down and keeping organic / free range prices high and the farmers? Well, they're just trying to make a living, battling every other part of the consumer chains demand for cheap cheap cheap (or should that be cheep cheep cheep!) Farmers are only doing what the government allows and the public demands.

 

I'll get off my soap box now and shut up and no, I'm not in the farming business!!
