Taxman!!!!

Recommended Posts

for the last 4 years we have been playing catch-up with the tax office, getting horrendous bills out of the blue for much more than we expected from when OH wa self employed. There have been all manner of cock ups, bills for £25K+ etc just after christmas 07 & 08 and although OH pays PAYE for the last 4 years taxman forgot to deduct any of this and sent us another whopping bill last summer. This we managed to sort this one out but it was all so stressful. We spent this christmas worrying about what would arrive this week, no word from our accountant which was strange :!: OH phoned him today, wait for it we owe ..............23p whoopieeeeeeee :dance::dance::dance:

we did pay in instalments but the bills just got bigger & bigger, he was earning money from several different sources and because he is a GP when he was in a partnership they have this weird system where they pay tax on part of the current year & part of the previous year (not sure its still like this) and it was rolled forward when he left & added onto one tax year, then all sorts of other bits & pieces were added, money earned years ago that he thought had been accounted for & apparently hadn't. Eventually the tax bill for 2006/7 was more than his income, we knew there would be some catch up but it really was crippling. then the walls holding the roof on collapsed & we had to take out a huge loan to get it repaired - insurance didn't want to know- really pants few years

Now we know we are clear most of his income is taxed at source and he has a little from teaching which we save for so we should be OK, still don't trust them though, cannot help thinking something else will crop up, but I think a nice meal out is in order tonight - was going to the gym but s*d it

oh, what a relief for you!

I got in a muddle with tax years ago, not to the extent that yours sounds like  but not my fault, the cashier where I worked had failed to declare to the tax office that I had a company car, and three years later they asked for all the money ... I reached a state where if an envelope arrived marked 'Inland Revenue' I couldn't bear to open it  They are SO inefficient, and their letters were sometimes indecipherable (I swear I once had one which had a sentence with no verb in it!)

Thankfully I now keep on top of things, but online filing makes life much easier. I did mine yesterday and it only took me two hours and one session of bursting into tears ... it would help if I filed everything more carefully and didn't have to search through everything to find my P60!

OH came home with a bottle of bubbley last night and we walked into the village for a lovely Thai meal.

I know people are struggling at the moment so I dont want to upset anyone, but it looks like OH and I have come through the very worst of our hard times. We have had our own private credit crunch over the last 4 years when the country was allegedly having a rare old time :  So if the chancellor needs some expert advice we are more than happy to ablige
