Library Assistant job

Recommended Posts

My local library is advertising for a library assistant. This seems like a great job for me to apply for as i'm quiet (not supossed to make much noise in libraries), enjoy reading and i enjoy interacting with people and being organised. I'm 19 and have never had a 'proper' job before. I currently volunteer in my local Cancer Research and Oxfam. I've got 9.5 GCSE's and 2 A-Levels.

So I got an application form today and i've filled in all the boring parts-name, address etc. Need to remember to check about references tomorrow when i'm volunteering.

However i'm rubbish at knowing what to put in the box where it asks why I want the job.

So i'm hoping you will be able to give me some ideas of what to write.

Those type of questions are annoying aren't they, for most people the answer would be 'because it sounds like an interesting job, and I REALLY need the money' :) Seriously I think you should put something along the lines of how much you enjoy reading, how you think the free library service is a fantastic resource, you are good with people and you think you would really enjoy the job and be a happy worker. Good luck, hope you get it.

that sounds like a great job! :D

the best thing to do is look at what they're asking for and formulate your responses around their criteria. This is because they'll probably have loads of applications to read and it's best to stick to what they've asked for. You can elaborate in the 'additional info box'.

What does the job spec/description say and I'll help you out? :D

Hi Emma :D

I am currently a Senior Library Supervisor in a public library and was a library assistant for 16 years before my current job! :P

PM me if you want more info... I shall dig out the person specification to jog my memory.

From what you have already said, it gives you lots to write about on your form. Obviously you enjoy the experience of working with the public, helping them , being friendly polite etc. Think about what interests you about libraries in particular? Do you use your library? If not go and have a look as they probably offer the internet and a wide variety of resources - not just books...

Libraries aren't as quiet as they used to be either! Do they offer children's initiatives like Bookstart and storytimes?

Just let me know if you need some help  and good luck! :)

I think your experience in the charity shop is a really good grounding for this job. Make sure you stress this as it's a really strong plus point in your favour. It shows that you're willing to work to benefit other people and that you're not necessarily money orientated.

Mention that, as part of the charity work, that you are experienced in dealing face to face with the general public of all ages and backgrounds and that you enjoy it and feel you're doing something worthwhile. If you've had to deal with a particularly awkward customer it might be good to give a specific example of what happened and what you did to resolve the dispute.

Tell them that you have handled cash because you worked on the till (that is if you did of course) and are therefore numerate and trustworthy. That you are extremely organised and have handled and organised stock in the shop (if you've dealt with the second hand books, mention that too).

Don't forget to say that you're computer literate and that you use the internet on a daily basis and if you've ever shown anyone else how to use it, stress that too as that will be a huge plus point in your favour! In fact, if you've ever had to explain or teach anything to anyone, mention it as it shows you can impart information.

I assume you have chickens? :D That means you're caring and responsible ;) and if you've dealt with a sick chicken, mention that as it shows you can remain calm under pressure and are observant!

Tell them you are really keen to impart your love of books and learning to other people and think that the library is an extremely valuable resource and mention some good points about your specific library (flattery gets you everywhere ;) )

I'm sure Tigerlily will be able to help with more specific information.

Good luck and if you want to post your answers here, I'd be happy to give you some feedback. My sister is a trainer, she trains trainers for the NHS and has loads of experience of compiling application form and CVs and has given me loads of good advice over the years when I've had to fill applications in so hopefully I can help you a bit.

I think it's a brilliant job and wish you all the luck in the world :D PM me and tell me which library it is, we're in the same county so I'm just being nosey ;)

Best of luck Sunshine!

You've been given great advice, not sure I can add anything really, other than maybe check out whether your county has its libraries online ie. can borrowers renew or order books via the internet- have a look at the website for "insider" info which will impress them as it shows that you are keen! (not sure how this could fit onto a CV- this maybe for when you get to the interview stage!)

Definitely stress your IT skills- many libraries have the People's Network facility which is free internet access for everybody, and the public may often ask for help.

You sound perfect for the job !

Interest in reading and life long learning-i enjoy reading and do visit the library frequently, however i'm sure how to word that i enjoy reading so it doesn't sound like i've just put it down because that is what they would want to hear.

Have a think about why you enjoy reading - tough I know. Eg. For me I read a variety of books, some take me places and experiences I wouldn't get otherwise, some are familiar and relaxing. I love factual books as well as I always want to know more about almost anything.

Try brainstorming some thoughts and see if it helps explain what you love about reading

Good luck

Talking about the sort of books that you enjoy reading, maybe name a few favourites and why you love them and that should demonstrate that you love to read - just my opinion - hope it helps!

Good Luck!

Libraries aren't as quiet as they used to be either!

Funny I was just going to say something along those lines - you should put how you like to help people with computers cos that's all the library staff do round here! We HATE the library service nowdays as its too loud and getting help is like trying to get a same day appointment at the Doctors! It seems to be all about helping people on the computers rather than with books so even if your libraries havn't gone THAT far you could probably get some mileage out of mentioning the computer stuff.

The thing I do like about the library service is that they are now open for VERY convenient hours, we always go on a Sunday if we have to collect a book that we've reserved online. One of our libraries is open for extremely strange hours - again I don't if it's like that where you are but if it is then saying something about your flexibility would be good.

Patricia's note about why you enjoy reading is sort of what I was going to say.

I was once told "don't say you like reading, say what you like to read and why"

I like the way Patricia says it though.

Are you in any reading groups? If so you could mention this.

What do you think they mean by "Outreach Activities"? Schools? Hospitals? Nursing homes?

Poet's comment about demonstrating that you can impart information is good too.

How will you demonstrate an interest in "Life long Learning"? As a Librarian what further qualifications might you acquire? Can you demonstrate that you currently enjoy learning?

eg, have you undertaken any courses since your A levels?

Good Luck Sunshine, I'd give you the job!

Good luck! I agree with all the advice above, particularly why you like reading, rather than just that you do.... Don't forget though, the application will get you the interview, but the interview will get you the job: so if you think it's sounding a bit bland, don't worry, you can add lots more info at the interview (where am sure they'll ask you what book you've jsut read, etc - given that you like reading is on the application form...). You sound enthusiastic and cheery in your posts, so I'm sure you'll come across the same in the application form.

Good Luck with the job application. :D The job sounds brilliant and the advice you've been given is excellent.

I went for an interview for a library assistant job a few years ago, and 90 per cent of the interview was about "promoting diversity". Lots of very detailed questions about issues of disability, religion and differing cultures.

It is very important to make sure you address all points on the job specification. Perhaps do a heading for each different point and write a couple of sentences, including an example for each one.

VERY BEST WISHES.

Hi Emma,

You've had fantastic advice from everyone! :D

Def say what books you like reading and why...

What I did on my application was to list essential criteria and number it and give details as to why I fit the criteria, then do the same for desirable. As long as you cover all the essential you should get an interview. Then I would put another paragraph underneath and put more personal stuff and why I want the job. Not too long, but so they get an idea of your personality etc. The interview is usually based on what they have listed as essential criteria (customer care etc) and may include a couple of customer-related or library scenarios and sometimes there may be a test (putting things in alphabetical order or adding some figures). Nothing too daunting!!!

Good luck :D Let us know how you get on
