Victorian Farm

Recommended Posts

I caught bits of it as I was busy, but made sure that I watched the rabbiting with nets.

Is it me, or is the younger, chunkier chap quite fanciable?

Why on earth did they intervene with that ewe of theirs? She's a big-boned lady and was doing well; I suspect that the producers wanted to see them 'getting in there' I used to help out with lambing years ago and it's best to leave it to mother nature where at all possible.

We love watching it - although it doesn't have the family feel that their last series Tales from Green Valley, had.

As you know Clare - we were astounded at the intervention in the lambing  - I feel they did it just for the show as normally a traditional sheep like that would be left alone. It wasn't fair to not wash hands and use lubricant either :(

We often watch it again on Saturday - there is always something we've missed

I think he has a certain something about him too

It's such a lovely programme and in such a beautiful setting. I'm very lucky cos it's only 12 miles away from me. As part of my job I produce the leaflets for Acton Scott Working Farm Museum and can go at the drop of a hat to see the piggies and other critters

Hate to be a kill-joy but found it all a bit too staged.......as someone said earlier it's not really how it would be, where are all the children? Also I do get the feeling that the participants never really would be able to cope (the wood cutter was a joke!!), apart from the bits they film - the pessimistic me knows that the work is probably done by some stage hands and they only do it for the cameras

Let's not romanticise how things were, it was bloomin' hard work and although I would like things to be simpler I think we would all struggle with how 'life used to be'!

I did, however, adore the basketmaker!!! I covert an oak basket!!!!!

That's why I said it should have been a family with older teens maybe.

There doesn't seem to be any connection between the 3 of them, even though it is just an experiment.

I am sure they have used families in similar projects.

There also seem to be a lot of Victorian experts around, complete with Victorian dress

I didn't see Tales from Green Valley, was it good?

It's always a shame when the perceived need for 'good TV' gets in the way of accuracy and what is/isn't necessary :?

Very good - it covered the 12 months and was set in 1620 - do you want to borrow the DVDs?

The pig man on this weeks episode was Richard from the River Cottage forum. I like the fact that they are just ordinary people but they dress the part to fit in with the era being shown.

I agree that it doesn't portray family life but is still very informative and watchable. My ancestors were all farm labourers so there is always something for me to watch and think about.

14 year olds were like adults. I guess all children would have had jobs to do.

DS was really interested in the basket making and would love to do that. He's only 10 but he wants his own farm and now perhaps wants to use really traditional methods!

I thought the episode with the sewing machine was very funny. I was given a singer treadle by my grandmother for my 16th birthday which is quite awhile ago it was a massive and heavy machine. I learnt to use the machine very quickly all it needed was momentum but because it wasnt modern enough I didnt take it with me when I married and I have no idea where it went to. :shameonu: Last weeks episode was about the chickens they kept but not a very informative item and the part about the rogue dog  still looking forward to tonights.
