..lay a little egg for me
DS has asked for a "volcano cake" for his birthday cake (March 13th). I'm thinking some kind of chocolate cake with red icing for the lava, but any ideas how to get the shape? Could I make a choc cake with too much baking powder so it rises up to a point? Any ideas you top cake-bakers? Edited March 17, 2009 by Guest
Egluntyne
How about baking it in a pudding basin?
Egzandra
What about a round cake for the base, say 7 inches, then get a few swiss rolls and up-end them on the top of the cake in a wigwam shape with icing. Then cover with roll out icing, the rougher the better, with the red eruptions coming out of the top. If you need to stabilise the mountain bit, you could use a few chopsticks in between the swiss rolls ...... any good?
..lay a little egg for me
Mmm, like the pudding basin idea and then maybe (just thought of this) a ramekin dish if the base of the pudding basin is not small enough to look like the cone of a volcano. Snowy
Hmm, I'd go for a round cake, toppped with an upside down pudding basin cake. Hollow a bit out on top of the pudding basin cake, ice with chocolate buttercream icing to look all lumpy and bumpy, and put some red/orange jelly in the crater at the top. Trickle with red and orange icing down the sides.
Guest
couldn't you just cut a round cake into quarters, stand the quarters on end on their flat end and stick them together with butter cream until you have a mountain shape? You might need two cakes. Then cover with more buttercream and then do the orange/red icing. Stick a few jelly dinosaurs round the bottom

Snowy
Those were just what I had in my head Christian! They look fab - wonder if my boys would like one of those this year
Lewis
Have a look at this link I like the eruption idea, dry ice and spaklers, or putting alcohol in a shot glass and lighting it so that the alcohol burns . Careful with all the kids though
..lay a little egg for me
Finally got my OH to take a pic of the finished cake and also worked out how to upload to Flickr and to post the image on the forum (its a steep learning curve ). Anyhow, here is the finished thing (I'm actually pretty chuffed at my achievement...particularly in light of my rather pathetic red nose cup cakes that looked like a 5-yr-old had iced them )

Mrs Webmuppet
Looks fantastic. Which reminds me it's three months to LMW birthday and she wants something that looks like one of those cakes on Ace of Cakes I had best start thinking about what I'm going to do in case I need to order anything.......
