fluffyknickers
My three girls have been taking themselves to bed around 5-5.30pm even though the nights are now lighter. Is this early or not? Does it matter? Is it to do with being young/not laying etc Or just perfectly normal and they are all going to bed at this time. x
bluekarin
Mine are doing the same. I thought, with it getting lighter in the evenings they'd be off to bed later and was imagining them staying up until 9 or 10 in the summer
Snowy
They will stay up much later in the summer. Mine start to go to bed as the light starts to fail. Not sure what time that is at the moment, but 5.30 sounds about right.
Adams Egg
Same here but they are getting up and becoming much noisier in the morning ( 6.30 ish !)
Barkisland
Mine are up at first light, and take themselves off to bed as soon as the sun dips below the horizon. They are definitely up later in the evening than they were last month - by about half an hour, I think.

madchickenlady
My girls are finally returning to the coop at around 5.30-5.45 ish. They free range 'til bedtime, so I spend a good ten minutes by the back door waiting for them to all be in the run so I can shut them in
ted
Mine usually start going upstairs at around 4:00-4:30. The leghorns are always first and the wyandottes always last...

redfrock
my new girls are in bed between 5 - 5.15pm and my older girls around about 6pm. Come the height of the summer and they will be dirty stop outs, not going to bed until about 10pm and still managing to get up at about 5am
Cooks
mine are about 5.30pm, off they all go to bed some days I wish I could go that early...
shibby69
I've always noticed my two Brahmas Opal and Jet are away first, by 5:30pm, and my hybrids Martha, Cindy and Betsy seem to stay up for another hour or so - they're always in bed before it's really dark though! Martha is a bit of a hooligan and still potters around the garden when it's getting dark whereas Cindy and Betsy will be milling around just outside their coop. Betsy is my only non-laying chook and i used to have to put her back in but the past week or two she's followed the bigger girls
Groovychook
Mine are going to bed at 5.30 too even though it's light until much later. I have been leaving the cube door open overnight for them & they seem to like snuggling up and peeping out of the door until it goes dark! MadMitch
Mine like it neally dark before the go into their run, last night it was 6:20, I went out when it was almost dark to lock up the run and they were all still out pecking around. Rhoderunner
Mine go to bed at about 5:45 but if I am too quick to go outside they all come rushing back out again! So I have to wait until it is really dark before I can shut them in. Funny things!!!
flowerangelk8x
My is going to bed around 5.30 she is first. Then is in and out for about half and hour till i finally shut the door around 6. Is this ok to let her come in and out like that, or should i just shut the door as soon as she goes in? Can see may have problems with her out clubbing all night???? Mazzarina
Mine go to bed about 6pm. If they're free-ranging they drag their feet, but once I put them in the run they tend to trek off to bed. If I try to shut them in before it's completely dark, runs out again in a flurry of 'what more does the day hold?', so I've given up on that tactic. Millihelen
Mine go to bed at about 5:45 but if I am too quick to go outside they all come rushing back out again! So I have to wait until it is really dark before I can shut them in. Funny things!!! Mine too! If I go out at about 7pm I can usually shut them in, however I've been known to go out much later and even then at least one comes down to meet me! My best bet is to turn torch on in advance (so they don't hear me switching it on) and hide it in my pocket (so they don't see me coming) and then try not to fall over anything in the dark.... Then I open the egg hatch and shine the torch in to count heads! That must really p*** them off!
Rhoderunner
I'm glad I'm not the only one! I feel such a fool rushing to hide inside when they charge back out at me! It's like grandmother's footsteps every night!!! Worse than getting a toddler to bed!

Valkyrie
For a couple of days they have been going in at 6.15, but today they went at 5.45 because it was so dark.

bokbokbokbok
Silly question - are they okay in their Eglus without food and water from 5pm until morning?
Larkspurs
Yep they are. They wolf food down to store in their crop and digest that overnight.
