CatsCube
does anyone know where I can get a decent but okay priced lemon tree? I have seen a few places but they are £50!! I want to grow one in my unheated greenhouse so I can make my own lemon curd with my own eggs and lemons.

Ygerna
Can Lemon trees be grown in the UK?OOh, I would love a lemon tree. Does anyone have any experience? Can you share tips please?
CatsCube
Hmmm have just been and looked in Homebase but they are £35 and pretty small. The problem seems that because of the high euro at the moment they are pretty expensive. There are a couple of places selling really good 1m + sizes but it does make them pretty pricey. A lot of the cheap places are the more dwarf ornamental types and only grow to about a foot high. Still I will keep hunting around.
Tiggy
I got one last autum but it is looking very sad at the moment I hope its' survived the winter
speckleyboo
I got one in wilkinson last week, £4 (wilkinson are having a big grow your own garden thing at the moment)(if you have one near you) - it wont have lemons for a couple of years, but either will ones you buy online for £50 as they come as a stipped down tree, its growing well, i picked up an Orange tree for £4 too. My aunt has a well developed lemon tree, it grows well, got to be careful it doesnt get too cold, has to be indoors (but with sunlight) in the winter. Using citrus food helps too, which generally you can get from any garden store.
Patricia W
I recently bought one with 26 lemons ( yes!!) in Homebase for £34 - couldn't resist it! It's doing very well in a sunny window ( facing west) and is flowering again. I'm not expecting 26 lemons next year, but we are still getting through this year's. Wonderful just to pick one from the tree. Last year I got an orange tree from Tesco for £4.99 and we've got 3 oranges this year. It was tiny and is now about 12 inches tall. Guest
My Italian Mother-in-Law (now sadly passed on) grew a couple of lemon trees from pips. When she died I took one, and my Mother took the other - she lives on the South coast and has a greenhouse. Mine is outside in a sheltered garden and does very little. My Mum's is thriving and produces 20-30 lemons a season. It has blossom on it as I write. It does get bad sooty mould in the greenhouse, though, which she just washes off with soapy water every so oftern.

It's in their conservatory and i know they've had quite a few lemons from it. CatsCube
Im guessing its not worth trying to do it in the greenhouse. Dispite sites saying they are frost hardy to -10 Im yet to find someone who has sucessfully kept one thats fruiting in one. Perhaps I will just ask for one for my birthday and grow it at home indoors.
Tiggy
I had one last autum and kept it in the greenhouse but it looks dead to me,
Cate in NZ
I love my lemon trees . I've got 2, plus a lime, an avocado, an olive, a fig and a pomegranite , as well as some of the more mundane fruit trees (apples, plums, pears etc )....I'm planning quite an orchard. That said I'm in a far more conducive climate for citrus fruits, I did try growing lemons back in the UK, but I'm not terribly green fingered and any plants needing much more than a bit of watering, feeding and pruning tend not to do terribly well with me Good luck with growing your own lemons, I've not yet harvested enough to make my own lemon curd, but there is something terribly satisfying about offering someone a drink...then having to pop outside to pick the lemon to serve with it
Charlottechicken
After reading this thread I am now inspired to attempt to grow my own lemon tree from some pips I saved from an organic lemon Should be interesting Does anyone know if they have a particular soil preference
Old Speckled Hen
I planted mine in potting compost but it now sits in Homebase citrus compost and I feed it citrus food. I'm sure lemons are ok in potting compost I just got the special stuff because it was on offer last week. Citrus will sprout even in the garden I don't think they are fussy. The trick is to get fruit that sets. I mist the flowers. Best of luck. The blossom smells wonderful.
henny penny
Hi Just had a look on the web to see how to grow lemon trees from pips and got this link http://aces.nmsu.edu/CES/yard/2000/040800.html as i have a couple of pips from a lemon i used today in cooking Interestingly the author seems to say that you have to wait 15 years before getting some fruit! does any one else have any experience?
