Egluntyne
Humour and bullying is a fine line, but laughing at others is deep in our culture, along with laughing at ourselves. That doesn't make it right, & I'd step in if someone was bullied, but a little joke & a chuckle over a picture, sometimes we just need to laugh & move on, or even not laugh but move on? Thank you for that Sheila. I posted as I thought it might amuse, nothing more sinister than that....and there is no denying that there is a resemblance. It is often surprising how threads meander down unexpected avenues, and even more surprising and when people, for whatever reason, take things offered in a light hearted manner personally. Yours, Auburn haired, freckled and left handed, all things I have been teased about and have had to come to terms with. *sobs* xx
Guest
I think I am quite an empathic person and tend to think "how would I feel if..." maybe that's a flaw in me, I don't know. Maybe Sarah Kennedy would find it all hilarious.

chickencam
A little teasing is fine and I don't think that this has gone beyond that. Most people have been both teased cruely by people at school etc and teased in a light hearted way by friends and family, it is part of human nature. My nickname at school was 'ski slope' because I have a turned up nose and my children call me 'mini mum' because I am smaller than all but the youngest and she is rapidly gaining Learning to be comfortable in your own skin is an important life skill and makes such comments water off a duck's back. Saronne
I agree with Kate and Cate. I don't like people's flaws being made fun of, it makes me feel uncomfortable. I used to get called ET at school (amongst other things) because I have VERY long, thin fingers and it was hurtful. A work colleague a few years ago even made the comparison. ET might be very cute but it's a bit of a shock when someone compares you to him! It just doesn't sit right with me when people are put up for ridicule, famous or not. You're right, Poet. I shouldn't have made that 'face for radio' comment. It's a gentle poke, but a poke, nonetheless.

Guest
........problem is I'd probably end up looking like some complete nonentity such a Fozzie Bear rather than a famous, cute film star like ET. How could you call Fozzie Bear a non-entity Cate! How hurtful, I hope he doesn't read this.... Seriously, it's very endearing that you defend those who are not present to speak for themselves. Name calling can be powerful & undermining, so I do agree with Cate's sentiments in general, but I think the topic here is relatively harmless. I was called FishFace but took it as a compliment.. Yours, a Fozzie bear fan, who is very unphotogenic... I never once personally thought for one moment Eglutine was being intentionally unkind, and as said, the woman concerned probably would not have the slightest interest in this forum, or read the comments, but if she did and having listened to and watched Sarah Kennedy over the years, i know she is an intelligent woman and therefore would probably not likely to be oversensitive and able to differentiate between tongue in cheek banter and that which is outright malicious and nasty. As someone said, 'When you put yourself in the spotlight' etc, and how many bad photos have i had taken over the years which are not a true representation of myself? Also it is a very lucky person who has not had a hurtful word said to them in their life time, myself included, and if i had took notice of them i would have withered up and died years ago, but i too can differentiate between that what is intentionally nasty. But for every one of those words, and that's life, there are a million others to counteract it. I too abhor bullying. Also it's very easy to read written words on a forum and assume you know that person's true character when you don't, or possibly couldn't. I do not consider myself a nasty person in the least, as i'm sure many, many others could attest to. Edited March 27, 2009 by Guest

Guest
And i most certainly don't think i would have done the job i have done for the past 23 three years if i was not a people person and unkind. Or rehome rescued greyhounds and extol loving care on them and my six hens, who all want for nothing. You want to see genuinely nasty, unkind people? I could show you a few, again pertaining to the job i do.
Guest
well, I never personally used the word "bullying" all I said was I don't like people being held up for ridicule or having their flaws made fun of, or am I not entitled to feel like that? I'm not the only one either judging from other comments or should we all just put up and shut up?
Guest
Again how the written word can be miscontrued and taken personally. I was in fact referring to Sheila's post who quite rightly said there is a fine line between 'Bullying' and the other.

Guest
I actually didn't think anyone had been particularly unkind. That picture did make her look a lot like ET. The comments then went on to say things like "the years havn't been kind" and maybe suggest less sunbathing would have helped and one mentioned alchohol - which is know she likes to partake in a glass or two as she mentions it often. These DJ's have been in for a lot of it lately though - last years CIN saw Wogan seemingly struggling with stability - he has piled on the pounds and was looking his age. Steve Wright has been recently "eating all the pies" but that bad press has started him dieting and as for "the ginger whinger" He's traded on his odd looks for his whole career. Sarah Kennedy does look a lot better when she's smiling - but even at her "best" she is looking her age and that's fine - nice to see celebs who are not afraid to grow old naturally. My favourite is Jamie Lee Curtis. She's in her fifties now, and i've loved her ever since the very late 1970's. She's posed semi naked, purposefully, showing a less than taut figure that these magazines seem to try and make us aspire to, and she has ditched the dye and proud of her greying hair, similar to myself in my forties, and the few wrinkles now starting to show. But could i care? Good on ya girl, (and this goes for Sarah Kennedy too, and all the others) i shall love you even when you are in your nineties xx
jlo
I have only just caught up with this thread and, as with most of these threads, it reads as a long, involved conversation between people who may not agree with each other's opinions but will defend their right to have them! I have sympathy with all of the views expressed but then - I am a wishy washy liberal! My personal view is that I would rather see someone age naturally. I caught a glimpse of Anne Robinson on tv the other day (it didn't last long as I cannot bear her patronising manner (just my opionion!)) and I was shocked at the amount of plastic surgery that has been done on her. It looked totally inappropriate to me
Alis girls
I was looking at Stings wife today and I find her more irritating than Sarah wotshername. I am glad I've not sunbathed too much, I love a tan but dont want to be a raisin and end up in a little red box with other raisins! Also never smoked so hopefully wont end up with a saggy mouth personally can't afford plastic surgery not even botox - working for NHS doesnt allow it unless one is married to millionarie and I'm not. I will grow old disgracefully - with dyed hair , caesarian tummy and a bit of cellulite Did anyone see Su Pollard in paper - now that is growing old disgracefully - go for it girl - is in The Mail and prob on net. She er probably needs a bit of help from Trin and Sus or that Gok wotsisname- see getting old cant remeber names

Cinnamon
Good for her! I saw her once at London fashion week, very many years ago, & I could not believe that one person was wearing so many clothes at one time.

Valkyrie
Just caught this thread! Well at least Sarah hasn't had surgery. I told my mum she had a quilty face - she said "Thanks" shortly before swatting me - but now I have noticed that my skin is doing the same, oh well, there is only so much weight I can put on to stretch the wrinkles! Chickvic - I thought you had a photo of my daughter for a moment, except she doesn't wear specs yet and is a bit prettier! I think I will show her that pic - she thought she was unique! We often see presenters and other people on the TV looking as though they are drunk, or have just got out of bed - just use the remote to pause - we often howl at how the screen stops at unflattering moments. Rona
Poor Sarah Kennedy, I am also 58 so can sympathise. Cameras and mirrors can be such spiteful little liars these days I don't listen to her show as it is far too early for me but apparently she was off for a long time last year as she was quite ill. Shame the photographer didn't use a more sympathetic lens on his camera or edit the result a little and she might have looked more like this but then probably "Ooops, word censored!"ody would have noticed his picture I didn't have the legs for a mini skirt first time round and certainly don't now so won't try and copy Su Pollard outfit - but I wish I was brave enough to try (and slim enough)

Alis girls
) )You're right Su P does wear a lot of clothes - I'd be sweating buckets with my dodgey metabolism if I wore all that even in winter. good legs though. I will now go and peruse the Sunday paper and see who else we can admire, pull to bits or book into next series of Trin and Sus!! If any of you want honest opinions on your clothes ask your teenage sons. My 13 yr old told me I looked fatter in my hoodies (so practical - a 47 yr old hooligan! ) so I threw them out with a load of other stuff he'd moaned about. I now squeeze into jeans and more fitted tops and he has said I look much slimmer . No he doesnt want to work in fashion - what a loss to the fashion world.
