how easy is it...

...to become a vegetarian?? I eat way too much meat, and i woudl love to try to become veggie. I tried last year for lent, and i lasted one day! :eh: Is Quorn good?

 

Any advice would be great! :D

My 14 year old daughter has been veggie since Christmas, & she is finding it really fine.

 

She loves Quorn, & if I do a bolognese,shepherds pie or chilli, I just do a small Quorn version for her.

Personally I can't stand the stuff & it does HORRIBLE things to me :roll::?:roll:

 

as a family we now eat veggie about 50% of the time too, so that has helped a lot 8)

Quorn practically hospitalises me. It makes me really, really ill. You don't want the details.

 

It is the vilest of vile stuff.

 

Just replace an increasing amount of your meat meals with non meat meals. It is an opportunity to be creative in the kitchen.

 

The Veg Soc site is very useful.

I like Quorn! - it doesn't do anything strange to my innards! :lol:

 

I saw a cookery book today and was coming to tell Sarah about it.....I may as well post about it in here now.......

 

In Wyevale garden centre they have a new range of books.....all called 101 xxxxxx They are £4.99 and include titles such as 101 Simple Suppers, 101 Perfect Desserts...and they also have 101 Vegetarian Meals. They all have a colour photo and are great little books.

 

The stand is only about 60cm high - easy to miss.

I'm half a veggie :lol:

 

It's not for one specific reason (liking animals, not liking taste/texture) but I always have been and so are my parents.

 

I'm half because I eat chicken (and turkey at christmas :roll: ) and some fish. I only eat chicken because everywhere you go there seems to be chicken (and bacon :evil: ) and I would find it hard to find something to eat. I'm not the 'classic' veggie because I'm not a huge fan of veg :D

I do like to know where the food comes from though so we grow veg and I raised and despached + prepared our turkey at the farm, and I always try and buy free range chicken.

Oh, I forgot about Quorn.

We all love it and you can do pretty much everything with it. I've no idea what its like compared to the real stuff, not having eaten it, but it tastes alright to me :lol:

The only thing I don't like are the burgers and cottage pies - not a huge fan of onion.

 

Linda McCartney veggie sausages + sausage rolls are good aswell, but they seem to come and go from the shops.

To my knowledge I have never tried quorn and dont buy any ready meals which would have had any in - I have just tried to look and see what it is made of and its really difficult to find out but why on earth would I want to eat this.

 

Mycoprotein is the ingredient common to all Quorn™ products. It’s a meat-free form of high quality protein. Mycoprotein is made by adding oxygen, nitrogen, glucose and minerals to a fungus called Fusarium venenatum.

 

It sounds terrible but I am sure as some of you say its quite nice really!! but dont fancy

:vom: Another non-Quorn fan here! Tofu isn't so bad though - boring and tasteless but you can use it in much the same way.

 

I used to be veggie, I was a vegetarian for about eight years but it's probably the same length of time since I started eating meat again. I only ever buy free-range chicken and pork, and as far as possible I buy organic free-range of anything else, however I only eat meat a few times a week. That's partly because it's so expensive!

 

When I was veggie, I did use things like Linda McCartney sausages or Tivali sometimes, but on the whole I preferred not to eat 'meat substitutes'. Try lentils in bolognese sauce, or shepherd's pie, or in soup or curries; cauliflower cheese is a regular on my menu; you can make all sorts of vegetarian souffles (sweetcorn, cauliflower, broccoli, spinach). I used to make a cracking walnut lasagne, just making tomato sauce as per usual and adding some walnuts, ooh, and roast vegetable lasagne is lovely too.

 

Grilled halloumi cheese and hash browns for a veggie breakfast (with a free-range egg, of course!) is delicious.

 

There are loads of books out there, as Egluntine suggests why not try cutting down the meat meals and having vegetarian meals every other day, say, to see how it goes?

I turned veggie when I was 13 though I still ate fish and then when I was about 26 I started eating white meat again. I don't eat red meat and that's because I just don't like it although bacon is the exception here (and it's usually bacon that break a veggie!!).

 

Things might be different now but I used to tire of eating vegetable lasagne when I ate out as this was about the only veggie option and 9 times out of 10 it would always be tasteless mush - why do people think that cooking for veggies has to be tasteless and/or smothered in cheese?!

 

I'm a fan of quorn - cook with Quorn mince a lot though my husband refuses to eat it and I give the kids meat so just have two pans on the go when cooking a spag bol or chilli!

 

Now I'm older there's no way I'd turn veggie again - I enjoy my food far too much for that!

 

Why don't you give being veggie a go? It's the right time of year to start, ie lots of salads and not too much stodge!!

 

Let us know if you decide to go for it... at least you'll have a good supply of eggs for that protein!!

I can't eat Quorn either, it does dreadful things to me too. I'm afraid Linda McCartney sausages were firmly off the menu after I tried them once - I was laid up for days!

 

The fungus it's made from is a pest on cereal crops, but is cultivated in big vats to make the mycoprotein constituent of Quorn.

 

Very useful stuff if you can eat it, but otherwise there are plenty of alternatives and excellent cook books out there. We eat veggie a fair amount of the time, despite being confirmed carnivores, and find it easy and tasty to do so.

 

 

Tofu is gross unless it's flavoured with something!

why do you want to "class" yourself as anything??? If you want to cut down on meat or cut out meat but eat fish then do it, you don't have to call yourself anything to do it, just do it! ;)

 

p.s. no you're not a veggie if you eat fish, fish are animals too.

I wish I had the willpower to go veggie but it seems like such hard work, finding non meat substitutes for essentials vits and protein etc plus, I love meat!

 

It's very admirable what you're planning to do, let us know if you manage it.

I was a veggie for a whole year and I really liked it. I even did it over two christmases, and I love my christmas dinner. I can't remember why I did it - maybe due to a diet, as I think I lost loads of weight, (actually, I remember now; my now sis in law showed me a video about animal welfare and it was all rather upsetting) and I can't really remember why I started again. One of my fave meals was a nut loaf from Tesco which had a spicy tomato topping. But it was over 15 years ago, so I don't think they'd do that anymore. I quite liked the Quorn pieces, and used to eat them cold :oops:

 

But I love meat and I think I'd find it very difficult to do again.

My ex flat mate had several goes at becoming veggie - when we lived together it was lentil this and lentil that and u can guess the rest :vom: gale force! her other attempt was as a married lady with a huge meat eating OH. it lasted a bit longer then they went meat eating again and were eating offal (or is it awful!) and hearts you name it they ate it. My other friend and hubbie are veggies but eat dairy and fish so cooking for them is easy. we eat a lot of meat free anyway

If you are going to go veggie, please make sure you do it properly and take in all the required nutriants that your body needs. My oh was veggie for 20 years and started eating meat about 5 years or so ago. He seems much fitter for it. I dont think he ate enough beans and pulses to make up for the lack of meat in his diet.

 

We eat some meat free meals and some non now. But eat free range. That works well for us.

I think the term is Pescetarian if you eat fish but not meat.

 

We gave up meat for lent and for the most part found it okay, I used lots of eggs, pulses and nuts. :) We hated Quorn and Tofu though. :vom:

 

Have to say we thoughly enjoyed a huge joint of beef of Easter Sunday and although we will have more veggie meals there is no way we would go completely veggie.
