Old Speckled Hen
We are having problems with the septic tank which is being sucked out this very minute. Then my hubby (my hero who can do all manner of DIY) plans to go down it to check for cracks. I have to help him , outside the tank of course

clootie
*groan* Oh dear - been there. Hope your tank's not south facing, with the weather we've been having recently, that "job" in the heat/sunshine is even more of a treat !! Just remember to breathe in through the nose and out through the mouth - not the other way round. Good luck !!

Cyber Chook
What a brave chap. Maybe the whiff that'll hang around him for days now, could become quite the fashion in manly cologne: Eau de 'Colon'.

Old Speckled Hen
I can't believe how wonderful you all are. So many hilarious comments ... really cheered us both up. He had to descend into the depths of only one of the tanks (there are two) and patch up a small crack. I made up some mortar then we decided on that expanding foam stuff. We were both wearing disposable boiler suits, hubby with only his underpants on underneath. Too much info here? Well we could just chuck everything out afterwards. I made him take it all off at the front door and run starkers upstairs to a hot bath. I don't think it's been emptied EVER, the water tank was three quarters full of C**P, and I think that's where the real problem lay. Anyway, good job done, just the top to repair (made of sleepers that have rotted ... I don't believe the "Heath Robinson" efforts of some people ... obviously no building regs in those days). Thanks for the tea and the Chanel 5, didn't need the hosepipe.
Chook n Boo Mum
We have a septic tank & we emptied it for the first time in 10 years a couple of months ago (I locked up all living creatures and went out leaving DH to deal with it !!) So much better than the monthly emptyings of our neighbours cesspit ! I bet you saved a packet in doing that job yourselves......... Alis girls
not altogether sure what cesspit is but assume its something to do with sewage!! Good luck and hope you dont find anything nasty down there like a rat?
Alis girls
Sorry septic tank - where did I get cesspit from?
clootie
When we moved into this house over 7 years ago, the previous owners, who had been here for over 25 years, weren't even sure where the tank was!! Needless to say, when the cellar began to fill with water we eventually traced the problem to, the septic tank. Once found and uncovered, the expression "solid matter" took on a whole new meaning! It was so rock solid, well, I'll leave the rest to your imagination.................. Sorted now !!
