Cinnamon
This is strange to say the least. Yesterday, after eating a piece of cake, I got a very strong bitter soapy taste in my mouth, which now comes back after I eat anything. Its truly horrible & I need to swill to get rid of it. Even my favourite red wine tastes vile, thought thankfully G&T is fine Anyhow, I was a bit concerned & I Googled it, to find pages & pages about this happening after you eat pine nuts - I had eaten pine nuts 2 days day before, as had most of the other poeple who have had this experience.................. I just wondered if anyone else had heard of this or experienced it? http://www.steadyhealth.com/Bitter_taste_in_mouth_after_eating-t86136-0-asc-10.html
Olly
No, I've never heard of this - how odd, it's clearly quite a common phenomenon. I love pine nuts, I often toast a handful to put on a salad or something. Have you found out how long it takes to wear off?
Cinnamon
It can take up to a week Apparantly if they are toasted there is less of a risk, but I just threw them on as they were, & as the recipe says. I will never, eaver do it again - the taste is very storng & really awful, plus it lasts for around an hour after you have eaten.
Lesley
No, I've never come across that either I always toast them though as I think they are tasteless when raw. I have had that problem with a medication once and it is horrible - I did lose some weight though!
Seagazer
I'll have to ask my daughter. She always throws pine nuts into food. Very strange.
Cinnamon
One thing I have done this time is use a different brand of pine nuts. It was the bog standard Tesco's ones which are with all the chopped nuts - I usually use the Tescos ingredients range toasted ones. Apparently its usually ones that originate from China that do this, & I have just checked the pack prior to chucking them out, & they do indeed come from China. Off to the shops to but some mints now (& I loathe mints, to give you some idea how dreadful this soapy taste in my mouth is )
Faye&Ant
I normally buy those same Tesco pine nuts but generally cook them or chuck a handful to the girls as a treat. Thanks for the info, I may leave them alone for a bit now. Sorry you had to expericence that horrible taste to find this out . Hope it disappears quickly. Bantambabe
My sister had this a month or so ago - she was really worried until Google sorted her out I'd not heard of it before either Lasted best part of a week I think - sorry Strange the things these veg/pulses etc do to us - I remember my shock at my first wee after eating asparagus
Chook n Boo Mum
Strange the things these veg/pulses etc do to us - I remember my shock at my first wee after eating asparagus Ummmm, sorry to be thick, I eat a lot of asparagus at this time of year as it grows like a weed in our garden...... should I be looking more closely at my wee ?! Tessa the Duchess
It's not so much the look of the wee, it's the smell. If you eat asparagus then your wee smells of .......asparagus Tessa
Yorkshire Pudding
Not everyone's, Tessa! Some of us lack an enzyme that processes the flavour compounds in asparagus. If you lack it, the process stops at a certain stage, leaving a very smelly compound that comes out in your wee. I have the enzyme and can eat asparagus without smelling. OH and the DSs don't have it and I insist they use the OTHER loo from me if we ever have it for tea! Training for my PGCE we did an experiment to see who had this enzyme, and who lacked the one that gets rid of the red in beetroot (if you lack it you wee red), and who had the saliva enzyme that knocks the head off beer at a single taste. We were each fed asparagus, beetroot and beer. I have all 3 enzymes, but one of us had none of them - she had flat beer and red, smelly wee! Chook n Boo Mum
....I wish I hadn't asked !! I think I'm ok & have the enzyme, I don't have any recollection of asparagus scented wee..... and to my knowledge have never wee'ed anything other than shades of yellow no matter what I've eaten and don't drink beer so couldn't comment on that! The things you learn on a chook site !!!! Sha x
Cinnamon
Funnily enough I had some wonderful fresh asparagus yesterday - & ended up smelly as usual, but I love & adore it & I cannot give it up. I am the only one in my family who likes it, so no point growing any though Oh Yuk, a week of soapy tasting food then - JOY!!! At least my G&T's will still taste OK

chickencam
Weird My ED loves pine nuts and eats them as a snack. I wonder if it is an enzyme thing like with asparagus and beetroot
Saronne
Where, other than China, do Pine Nuts grow? (I'll be avoiding the Chinese ones!)
The Dogmother
That sounds horrid Sarah, I have some at home, so will check where they're from.
..lay a little egg for me
I have a 1kg bag of pine nuts from my suma wholefoods order, it is the second bag I have bought from them. The nuts are from China...no taste problems so far I guess it must be some batches that have too much of something or other (technical term) in them that affects the taste buds. Strange that its lasts so long though...sounds like some kind of nerve agent
Ain't Nobody Here
How interesting . I'll be scared to eat any pine nuts now . Although not being able to eat for 2 weeks sounds like a bonus to me - how to shift those extra pounds I've been piling on .
Cinnamon
I will tell you something, I ADORE pine nuts, but I will never never ever eat them again. A week of everything tasting bitter was enough to put me off for life The food I could live with - the wine I could not
Scramble
How odd Sorry, that you can't eat Pine nuts any more I cannot stay away from them
redhotchick
I love pine nuts, I haven't been able to get hold of any for a few weeks. I bought two 200g bags only last night! I'm worried now! I've not had a problem before though.... I'll try one bag and see how it goes. I wonder if it is an enzyme related thing? Fascinating thread!
