Not sure whether to hold out much hope. It has now been 20 and a half days and have not heard any cheeping or anything from eggs that Gemma is sitting on. Feeling a bit as we have done everything right - can't fault Gemma and they are good eggs (good breeder, good line, definately think one that I didn't set because of crack was fertile ). Can only blame the post office if nothing happens

 

Need some encouragement here and some hope

Hold on in there!!! I did not think we would get anything and then suddenly saw the tiniest little crack start to appear!!! and then the excitment starts I so hope you get something because it is a wonderful experience Good luck x

Thanks - just feeling a bit peeved as Gemma has been the perfect broody so far, really really attentive. We have put so much effort into this Going to go out and listen at the egg hatch in a minute

I actually picked the eggs up on day 21 and you could feel the chicks moving around in the egg!!!! let me know!!!

Did you candle them? If you hold them up to your ear you'll hear either cheeping, tapping or a squelching noise as the chick moves about.....it's quite loud. I had 2 eggs left last night, held them to my ear and not a sound, so I knew the chicks were dead (they were fine on day 18). I candled them to confirm and switched the incy off on day 21 for the first time.....I've always had stragglers on day 22.

Theres definitely still time for them to hatch but if I were you I'd listen to them so you know you're not on tenterhooks for nothing.

I'd hold on another 2 - 3 days, then give up. If incubating using the incy. I normally wait for 3 days after, then switch off. I will probably have the same problem - I have 2 broodies sharing a clutch of eggs. I can't remember if they are due this week or next. But Marlene has been brilliant. She goes off them every morning, eats, drinks, poos& dustbathes then goes back for the day! We are wanting to candle the eggs to be certain something is going on.

I haven't candled (and really wish I had now). She does seem to be up to something - I can see her tail through the door of the eglu and she is moving about quite a lot now but not leaving the eglu, so hoping something is happening.

 

I will try and listen to an egg later if no news this afternoon - don't want to disturb her if she is doing a good job and I just don't know it

With her being a broody, it might take a bit longer because the weather being a bit cooler.

You set them on the night aswell, so are only due to hatch tonight (maybe even tomorrow morning).

 

Its not too late to candle them , you'll see if there is a chick or not, if there isn't the egg will be clear, and will probably feel quite light. Try to do it while she's off the nest eating or whatever. Any you can usually feel them wobbling around at this stage while candling them.

Thanks for that - I did wonder about the colder weather

 

she doesn't move for love or money at the moment - I turfed her off the nest after 3 days two days ago as she hadn't moved (she was getting off herself after 3 days then). Whenever I look at her now she glares at me. I think I will see what happens tonight - no bad smells wafting from her yet so hopefully none have exploded - they hadn't two days ago.

 

Other than sitting on them still she has been quite active, lifting her tail up and down and moving - do wonder whether she is hearing them Difficult for me to hear anything without lifting the eggs - under a tree with loads of tweating birds

Towards the end of ours hatching Whisper would not budge off the eggs!!!I think she could hear the tapping and movement under her Gosh im getting really excited hear for you!!!!

Be patient!

I have just had my 5th hatch using a broody and I have found that sometimes you hear cheeping as they are hatching and sometimes you don't! Chicks have lost of rest periods when between doing all the hard work of pecking their way out and will be quiet at these times. My last lot took all day to hatch and didn't cheep a lot until near the end of that day.

I'm sure yours will be successful!

Will lift her off later - something has happened as I have found half an egg shell at side of nest with a bit of blood and some feather down on it

Sounds like one has hatched...the down will be hers that she has used to line the nest, and stuck to the wet shell. Hopefully the chick is tucked underneath. If it looks like half an egg shell then sounds like it hatched naturally, it wouldn't look like that if she's pecked at it.
