kitbag
Congratulations! I love being an auntie (and a great-aunt, now). My friend had her baby in the bathroom as it all happened rather faster than expected. She rang the insurance company to make a claim, and they were stumped as it didn't fit their usual 'script' of filling in the claim form. Eventually they agreed that they would put down the cause of the claim as 'Escape of water' ...

chickencam
He was taken into hospital mid-afternoon today. He has lost 18% of his body weight since birth, 10% is average and he had a suspected infection. Initial tests have come back ok but he is on a drip and all wired up aparently The nurses got all excited when he started kicking and screaming this evening, but that is what he has done every evening and night so far and slept all day. I think the midwife paniced a bit because this is the first time since his birth that he has been seen by his own midwife. SIL has only been visited by a midwife twice since Friday. I had them every day with my 3 for the first 10 days and then a health visitor wqekly for a month. I had a couple of small babies and if you are breastfeeding they do lose quite a bit initially until your milk comes in. They have terrified the life out of SIL & BIL even talking about meningitis etc. Some positive Omlet vibes for him please. They are both staying over at the hospital with him tonight and he is in for a minimum of 48 hours.

bluekarin
I really hope it turns out to be nothing and he can come home soon. Its an awful time to be in hospital with an ill baby. I am sending lots of positive vibes there way (((((+++++++)))) I will say most of my babies were a good weight, but then lost loads and never really got up to the average percentile line for their weights. I breast fed the first two (they were 8 pound 6 and 8lbs) (number 3 was prem and 1lb 10 1/2 and to get her weight up after initial BF she went onto bottles). Just re-read your post. Twice! Since Friday!! I had a midwife visit every day for 10 days, like you. It became a pain in the end, but the first few days was a god send. Lesley
It can be worrying but at least he's being monitored. Have a chat with Emma (the Herd) - I think she had the same with Isabelle not long ago. It does happen with hungry babies who are breast fed, until the milk comes in. I hope she (your sister? - sorry) isn't advised to supplement feed too quickly, it becomes a downward spiral and milk supply is never up to scratch then. If she does have to use some formula, she could try expressing at the same time to keep the milk supply up. (we've just had to do that with a sheep so that we didn't end up bottle feeding the lamb Lamb had an infection and was too poorly to feed properly. We had to milk the sheep and then syringe feed the lamb, until she was strong enough to feed from her Mum)

If she does have to use some formula, she could try expressing at the same time to keep the milk supply up. In my experience they always suggest bottle feeding too quickly. I really hope he shows some improvment soon. Its a very worrying thing, especially for first time mums, but, babies are actually remarkably adaptable and much stronger than we at first believe. Can I suggest that if she does wish to continue to breastfeed, that she contacts a La Leche League or similar type of support now, rather than later. They will be able to offer support to maintain her supply whilst he is in hospital, and then advice regarding getting it all back to normal once he is home.
