We're all planning walk in runs! PART 2!

Recommended Posts

just catching up on this thread and thought I should finally put my WIR on here. So.....

Looking from the back to the front

Towards the back including 'the cottage'

The cube is on the outside of the run, makes for very easy cleaning/egg collecting

The 'mezzanine' plus roosting bars

A pophole so the girlies can get to the garden for freeranging safely

Also, we have just finished putting up the permanent roof as we were temporarily using a tarp when these piccies were taken.

Hi all, Im just about to start my base for the girls WIR, which arrives end of the month my (green eglu) will be inside and on a table with a ladder  .... Can anyone tell me if my girls PP & GNR will take to it straight away.. or do i have to introduce them slow!!!! ... I have a wild piece of land in my garden, which they love, A few days ago i put some rather large logs in it to attract some bugs for them YUM YUM........ But Both of them have gone mad!!!! not sure what they think they are, but wouldnt go anywhere near it. :? ... is this normal behavour??? ... I have removed them now and all is fine. I was hoping to put the logs and some branches in there new WIR... Will i have the same problem :?: ...... Has any body else had the same problem... HELP !!!!!

My girls got the hang of their new WIR quite quickly although I had to adapt the ladder and make it a lot less steep  .

Mine had the same reaction as yours, though, when I put a tyre filled with lovely dustbathing goodies. They wouldn't go within 3 feet of it so I had to take it out  .

The branches should be fine - mine perch on them all the time 8) .

Im planning my wir and hope to build it myself  to be honest im just getting all my ideas from aviaries4u, i have a couple of questions though regarding the construction methods used,

1. is the mesh fixed to the inside or outside of the panels ?

2. what is the best way to avoid any sharp /raggy edges when fitted to the panels,

3. is the 15cm substrate boadr at the bottom a complete panel or just 3 strips of 50 x 38 mm timber ?

4. i assume the panels are all bolted together ?

its going to be 4.5m x 1.8m x >1.9m made up of 12 panels 900mm x 1900mm

the plan is to sit it on a base of pavers around the edge. should be able to increase to 7 or maybee 8 birds.

i am slightly worried that the run will only really get the sun until late morning in winter, will get more in the afternoon in summer when the sun is higher.

any thoughts ?

Q1. is the mesh fixed to the inside or outside of the panels?

A1. Fixed to the inside by staples.

Q2. what is the best way to avoid any sharp /raggy edges when fitted to the panels?

A2. If trimmed correctly with sharpe wire cutters it's not a problem.

Q3. is the 15cm substrate boadr at the bottom a complete panel or just 3 strips of 50 x 38 mm timber?

A3. 3 strips of 50 x 38 mm timber.

Q4. i assume the panels are all bolted together?

A4. Screwed together, using 75mm screws, two comming in from each side.

There's some close-up shots of my A4U WIR here, which should help give you a better understanding. Also, I created a step-by-step slideshow, which you can view via the link in my signature.

thanks Andrew, excellent pics and excellent run, hopefully mine will be very similar, was wondering about how to do the roof panels, ther just sat on battons, simples, would never have thought of that, and cup washers as well, very proffessional job, well done

I live in Oxfordshire, which is outside the A4U 'supply and fit' area, so it was delivered in kit form and I constructed it with the help of the family (see step-by-step picture show here). Mine was a standard Walk-in Chicken Run (15ft x 6ft x 6ft), with no customization, so the cost was as shown on the A4U website. The only 'extras' that I added myself were the guttering and internal handles. Don't forget to include the cost of your chosen base. In my case I laid a slab base, which added around £100 to the overall cost. As I did all the construction myself I had no labour costs.

wow, i thought it would be a lot more expensive, even with shipping its still quite resonable. im trying to get a rough idea of what the materials would cost to do it myself.

is the timber sawn ? doesnt look it on the pics ?

ive made a quick estimate and think i would need over 200m of timber, 36m of wire mesh & 8 sheets of roofing(wickes about £48). anyone know any suppliers ? and how much they paid ?
