90 Chickens Stolen

Recommended Posts

This was on my local news today, 90 chickens were stolen. I have cut and posted it on here. Who does this sort of thing

A WOMAN who has been breeding hens for more than 12 years said she "doesn't have the heart to start all over again" after 90 of her chickens were stolen.

Polly Gibb discovered the hens, including 50 Columbian black tails – had been stolen when she went to let them out at 6am yesterday, after putting them to roost on Thursday.

She said the thieves must have carried each hen by hand to the road as her land in College Road, Sutton Bonington, is not accessible by car.

She said: "I'm not sure I've got the heart really to start again. I used to sell a few hens and eggs and run chicken-keeping courses.

"I've been doing this for about 12 years. It's not about the money really, it's like I've lost friends."

She estimates the stolen hens were worth hundreds of pounds.

Only eight of the Columbian black tails, which are an unusual hybrid with a large ginger body and distinctive black feathers just at the end of the tail, were left at the site this morning.

Ms Gibb said she is hoping the distinctiveness of the breed will help trace them.

Her breeding stock of Copper Black French Marans have all been stolen as have pet hens with names such as Princess Layer, Attilla The Hen and Ginger Rogers.

One white leghorn was killed and left behind. Anyone with any information should call Notts Police 0115 967 0999.

I don't understand things like this, people must be watching them and planned it all out.

Hopefully this message withh spread on forums across the country and all auctions are made aware so people can keep an eye and out this lady can get at least some of her pets back.

Just found an update in the Nottingham Evening post

Hot pink chickens will deter thieves

Friday, May 29, 2009

Paint foil: Chicken breeder Polly Gibb, from Sutton Bonington, has been spray-painting her hens to deter thieves after having 90 of them stolen. "I just spray the feathers not the skin so it doesn't irritate them," she said. Anyone with information on the thefts should call Notts Police on 0115 967 0999.

I always wonder, when I read stories like this, if the stolen birds don't end up in someone's freezer :? Who knows... I really feel for her, I'd be heartbroken.

When I was looking around at chickens there was a chicken farm in Staffs somewhere saying that they had had the majority of their stock stolen one night and therefore wouldn't be selling any chooks for the remainder of the year.

Let's hope these people are caught and that the chooks are ok.
