Broody Coops.

Recommended Posts

Just incase Tiger Lily goes broody again I've been looking around for a broody coop. The one that she raised her Brahmas in is currently used by the Orps, Dorkings and all the other growers. It was perfect for the job, the coop wasn't raised off the ground so it was easy for the chicks to use the run. The run has weldmesh on so again it was safe for the chicks, no small holes for them to squeeze through. I'd love an Eglu because it ticks all the boxes but Mr Griffin would kill me for spending all that money so I'm on the lookout for something cheaper. I need inspiration or links to other suitable housing. What have others used?

Tiger Lily has laid about seven eggs now so it must surely be a matter of time

I have just converted one of these:

into a broody coop. Mine was in the sale and had £5 off. It comes flatpacked and I made it up replacing one side so that it is half mesh door and half boards. Because the roof comes off as well, it can be easily accessed. I have cut down the run that I built in December to be the broody run.

Did you leave a review to say what you are using it for... ? I bet they wouldn't believe you if you had  !!!

Fantastic use of a storage box though

All sorted :D Thanks to Ebay  I've now got to play musical coops but it was a baaaaaaaaaaaargain. My super massive coop cost £300 earlier this year. Tonight I've bought the exact same one, brand new in it's box, for just £112  So now I need to collect it, paint it with creosote, construct it and somehow persuade the ex-batts, Tiger Lily & the Brahmas to vacate their coop and move into the new one. Then I can put my growers in the ex-batts coop thus freeing up the coop that Tiger Lily used when she had the Brahmas.

I also need to find a way to tell Mr Griffin...........

It's not here yet, I'm off to collect it on Saturday. Then I have the task of trying to persuade the dim witted ex-batts to move into it  I don't quite know how to break it to the chooks, they all think the ex-batts coop is the best and all but one now lays their eggs in it  But as it's one of only two coops I have with runs attached I need it for my growers so I'm going to have to upset a lot of ladies

And she's broody already  Since yesterday morning Tiger Lily has been flat as a pancake on top of the eggs laid by the ex-batts. As I said before, her coop has become the number one egg laying spot for everyone else. She's just adding them to her pile as they're being laid this morning  Certainly by next weekend she'll be back in her old coop as the growers will move out of it.

Now I'm desperately searching for LF Brahma eggs. Seems a shame to waste her talents :D

I had a busy weekend, painting and building and moving coops & runs around. Tiger Lily settled immediately back in her old coop and I moved her 9 LF eggs with her. Today I've been to buy 3 bantam blue buff columbian Brahma eggs and 7 bantam Poland eggs, a mix of silver laced, chamois, white crested black and a crele, some frizzle, some not. Tiger Lily failed to notice I'd exchanged her LF eggs for bantams and is sat happily on them  She's been very good and seems to be coming out once a day for a massive poo and to eat & drink as much as possible as quickly as possible  She was so funny on Sunday before we moved her, Tallulah had gone in to lay an egg and had somehow turfed Tiger Lily off. With Tallulah 'babysitting' Tiger Lily literally sprinted to the other end of the garden where the food is, quickly filled up, had a quick dustbath before dashing back to take over in the nest box again  She really seemed to appreciate Tallulahs help.
