8 new chicks - hatched today.. WHAT are they ?

Recommended Posts

There is a small holding 1/4 a mile away that sells hatching eggs and they keep numerous breeds.

I went to get some when Piffle went broody but they'd already sold all the ones that week put aside as hatching eggs. However, they did tell me that they eggs they sell to the public in the basket by the gate were MAINLY from purebreds and excess eggs. I was welcome to buy some of those as eating eggs if I didn't mind a mixture !

So - I came home with a dozen. One got broken on the first day. Piffle has hatched eight today and remains sat on 3. No cheeping from the unhatched eggs - but they do feel light so perhaps maybe another chick or two tomorrow.

Now, I KNOW there were two Marans as I purposely picked out two chocolate brown eggs and they keep a pen of breeding Marans. They also keep Buff Orps. I can't remember what else they have (lots !!!) although for general eggs there is some hybrids that are currently running with a Buff Orp cockrell I think now their main breeding season is over.

I went down tonight to show them the photo - but no one was in.

Curiosity is getting the better of me. Until I get hold of them, anyone fancy a guess ?

The black ones are cuckoo marans by the looks of it - looks like one girl one boy (boy has whiye blob on head)

The others look a bit light to be cream legbars who have more light/dark contrast in the colours, I would say they could be buff orp x sussex or something like that

Lovely chicks :D

unfortunately one dead this morning. I'm presuming the one at the back in the photo that looked a little hunched yesterday. The rest are healthy and well and have been scurrying around in the run with mum today (who has abandoned the remaining 3 eggs.)

I didn't get down to ask today - so no news on what the chicks are. I do know the two black ones were marans - but wasn't aware of how to sex them so young !

I'm not sure if they have legbars or not. The chicks I've got are definately much brighter coloured than those. Does look like they could be auto sexing though as the markings are very distinctive. Don't actually really care as long as they are healthy

I've got three legbar hens who are proving good layers. They've settled down too over the summer - they used to be as mad as a box of frogs....

Unfortunately not. Lost ALL of them and mum due to an inconsiderate owner letting their dogs run riot on land adjoining private property.

Dog killed my hen and all her chicks, 5 of next doors chickens and all of those further down the road.

This woman had been asked time and time again to keep her dogs from wandering. Seemingly she told the neighbour if her dogs were on common land it wasnt HER problem - it was his for not making sure his boundries were not secure enough to stop her dog getting in.... He said he was going to shoot it next time he saw it..... He would have done too !

It went from next door to mine and then down the road.

I'm told this is not the first occurence and there will be a bit about it in the next village newsletter. The dog has since been pts for medical reasons. It's the blinking owner that's the problem...
