Ziggy
Hi all, I'm going to visit Charlie for the first time tomorrow... I am beside myself with excitement... Now my worry is, I have never had a dog or puppy before... I'm quite confident I'll be fine dealing with Charlie once he is home, and I am very, very much looking forward to it all... The breeder seems like a lovely lady, and I'm sure I shouldn't be nervous, but when I meet the dogs tomorrow, I am now so nervous about what to do and not to do, to give a good impression... I'm used to handling animals, having chickens, rabbits, birds, rats, cats and so on, and I'm very happy to touch and cuddle any animal, but feel that under scrutiny I will not know what to do... Will it be ok for me to stroke the pups and their mum, or should I ask the lady first? Is there anything I shouldn't do, or should do, to give right impression? I don't know if I'm being nervous for nothing, but getting Charlie is such a long-awaited thing for me (been waiting for this day since childhood), and I want everything to go well tomorrow. I guess it's just excitement-related nerves or something, but I so much want to avoid giving the wrong impression, as I haven't met the breeder in person before... Can't wait to see Charlie... he's 6 weeks now... Shall I bring pictures back ? Edited October 17, 2009 by Guest

Snowy
I can understand you being nervous around their owner, after all, everyone likes different ways of doing things. I'd just ask her what she prefers - admit this is your first puppy and ask for her advice. I'm sure she will talk your ear off and be most willing to oblige! (plus it will make her feel happier if she thinks you will be doing things her way )
The Dogmother
Just sit down and let them come to you Ziggy, that way they'll be happier and the mother won't get stressed. I'm sure that you will enjoy it immensely Photos are obligatory!
Ain't Nobody Here
How exciting for you . I would ask her first too, she'll be pleased, I'm sure!
Chucky Mama
Just relax and go with the flow. Will he come with some form of insurance cover? Many breeders sell puppies with a month or so of cover which is a really good idea.
Lesley
Def. photos!!!!!! We asked the breeder if it was OK to pick the puppies up and she was fine with that. The mum was happy to be rid of her babies for a rest and disappeared of her own accord. The breeder encourages visits so that the puppy is used to the new owner - we are going to see Tali on Sunday and are taking Lauren and Jake with us. We will be leaving a cloth to be put in with the litter to bring home with the puppy the following week.

Seagazer
I would ask the breeder too what she wants you to do. Our 'interview' with Cookies breeder felt like going to see the headmaster. We were so nervous. We had to take the boys with us so she could see what our family unit was like. My boys behaved beautifully (like they should have done I think they were 15 and 9 at the time ). She said that she'd only got Cookie left because one family had put a deposit on her but when they came the kids were running around like loonies so she told them they weren't suitable. She obviously just wanted to know that her puppies were going to calm households which ours is on occasion She first called the dad dog out and he came and sat in front of us (his photo is in Dogs Today in the 'breed section' at the back under Goldendoodles ) and then laid down, then she called out the mum. So beautifully well behaved. Then she let us look at the puppies and we were allowed to give them cuddles. They were a really nice family. I think the breeders are well aware that people are nervous and want to make a good impression. I'm sure you'll be fine. Enjoy your cuddles today. Ziggy
Well I've been to see the puppies, and it went very well. The lady was lovely, and I spent over an hour talking to her and cuddling the pups. She suggested one of them as Charlie, but said I could have one of the other two males if I preferred. I played with the one she had suggested, his coat is smoother than that of his siblings, and he was a real sweetie (so were the other pups, they were all lovely). I chatted to Charlie and asked him 'so, what do you think, would you like to be my Charlie?', and the sweet little thing put his paw then his head on my leg. I took that as a yes. He then showed off by going in the garden and doing a wee there. His siblings came out with us too but didn't do anything, and Charlie sat near us with a very proud and smug look on his face! It seems he was keen to impress me! Then when the lady called them back in, he came and sat right near me, leaning on my legs. The lady herself commented about it, saying how happy and willing he seemed to come with me. We'll go and pick him up on 28th October, he'll be exactly 8 weeks that day. I met his mum too, she was a very lovely, beautiful and gentle dog. Here are the pictures, sorry they're awful quality, that kitchen was dark, the puppies were fidgety and I was too busy playing with the pups and talking to the lady to be bothered about technicalities... It was a long trip and an exciting day!!

Ziggy
Puppies seem to be everywhere... several people on here, some people at school... I'm so glad Charlie is coming soon or all those pups would make me extremely puppy broody... On a sad note, a family at school had their 5 months old pup stolen from their garden
The Dogmother
Oh no, what terrible news. What breed was it? Lurchers are always being stolen; I'd never leave one tied up anywhere. They get used for coursing then dumped.
