Space Chick
I have just been Christmas shopping, and have also been looking for some casual trousers and some smart trousers. Everywhere I went I saw these new Jeggings. I just don't get it Leggings made out of denim and made to look like jeans Why don't you just have leggings or jeans Also, sizing is another issue, I am not a small woman, so why do shops do trousers which are low waisted for the larger woman? No-one wants to see my gut, not even me All I want is a nice comfy pair of trousers that sit on the waist. Thankfully, good old M&S came to my rescue, they have their fabulous Per Una Roma range which have on the waist wide legged trousers also some lovely casual trousers in their standard range However, in some I needed a 16, in others an 18, yet in Next I am a 14 or 16 Definitely getting old, excuse my rant Off to have a calming cup of tea now
Cinnamon
I think Jeggings are very much a teen thing.Although neither of my girls have them, they are part of the College 'uniform' it seems, along with Uggs & ironed flat bleach blonde hair, plus too much fake tan M&S have something calle Treggings on their site, which are leggings in a thicker more trouser like fabric. Personally I leave anything leggingish to those under 25 & a size
Valkyrie
Make sure the legs are even Debs - a friend had to take hers back from the Per Una range because one side was long and the other side 2/3 inches shorter - and the whole lot were like it. Mind you that's some time ago now. I find Standard is too short and Long is almost OK, but the next one up is too long. I don't consider myself as having long legs either. DD has a pair of tights maded to look like jeans - weird.
chickencam
I find M&S short is too short for winter, ok with bare feet in summer, but Standard drags on the floor unless I wear heels and I don't really do heels. I need size 13 clothes please. I wear 12 at the top and 12-14 on the bottom and I aggree about waistbands, bring back 80's waistbands, they fitted your waist so you got no gapping and they didn't slip down and show your underwear. Low waist jeans are no good for anyone carrying an ounce of wobble, you just get the horrible muffin top look even if you are not that over weight. chelsea
I would like trousers to fit on the waist too!! (If only I had one..........a waist that is )
chickencam
I have a waist at the sides it's the front unemployed baby pouch that's the problem
A chickychickychick-ENN!!
I don't understand young person trousers. West London has a bit of an MC Hammer harem pants thing going on (think nappy to knees, then fitted jersey trousers) and East London is all about the American Apparel legging look. Sequinned, neon, shiny, wetlook - anything goes, so long as you're a size 10 or under. If you're over, you look like a highly decorated sausage. It's like being back in the 80s. But worse, because the kids seem to think it's all new and lovely.
whoopsie
I overheard a couple of teenagers enthusing about a dress in the shops the other day and was able to say 'yes i think I had one of those in the '80s' You should have seen their faces!! Ain't Nobody Here
I'm so old I've never even heard of jeggings . I agree, waistbands need to sit ON the waist. The clue's in the name . I have clothes older than my children - that can't be good (and no, they're not toddlers, one of them's in his last year at school ). Helly Welly
I must confess, i'm 35 and wear leggings. Actually, i hardly wear anything else. And no, i'm not skinny, i'm a size 12/14. I just love them, only in black mind. I can't get on with jeggings as they aren't as stretchy as leggings. As for jeans, a few years ago, high waist jeans were in fashion at Topshop so i bought a few pairs to last me as i knew they wouldn't be around long. I HATE low waisted jeans, even if it wasn't for the muffin tops, they are soooo uncomfy. And even skiny girls still get a muffin top with them, not attractive! Lavenders_Blue
Well I don't exactly consider myself old at 27, but thankyou for enlightening me about jeggings! I did see a girl the other day actually in the tightest pair of jeans I have ever, ever seen. I said to DH 'how on earth has that girl got those jeans on? With a shoehorn?' He did say he thought they might be leggings but I replied rather dismissively that no-one makes leggings out of jeans. Clearly I am wrong... Oh and despite my (I like to think) tender age, I remember leggings the first time round and they weren't a good look then - worn with chunky trainers and thick socks wrinkled around the ankles. They look better now worn with tunics and the suchlike, but only if you are about size 6 or have great legs which, lets face it, a lot of people don't! Reikiranf
I think that the point of jeggings is that you have the look of jeans & they tuck into your Uggs better and if worn with a jumper that you look more streamlined as in no lumps from belt loops, pockets or buttons. Despite being 43 years old and a size 16-18 I do often wear leggings either with long jumpers or tunics & my Uggs I can't look as bad as it sounds from reading this forum as I'm often complimented & asked where I've bought my clothes or boots from, hopefully not just so they know where not to shop When it comes to trousers or jeans I prefer just below the waist as I don't like squashing my piercing I wear what I want as long as I'm comfortable and feel good in it, I don't let others tell me what I should and shouldn't wear. chick wiggle
I think as long as you look in the mirror and dont throw up, then it doesnt matter what you wear as long as you are happy and comfortable. Age nor size should come into it. Some people you see walking around just cant have a mirror in their house, Space Chick Im glad you found something you liked and feel good in. ubereglu
I don't get them either. Mostly because I have big feet and if I were to wear them I'd struggle with shoes and look like I have clown feet! They're more sensible than the other trend of people wearing tops with don't even cover their behinds and leggings, it's just weird. You definitely need a skirt or something... jlo
I have had to chuckle whilst reading this thread as it reminds me of the "Grumpy Old Women" show that I went to see last night. Leggings came in for some justified criticism, as did half mast trousers on teenage boys. Jenny Eclair also had a thing about "Per Una" “where you can buy a rather fetching turquoise cardigan that makes you look like a tea cosy” Everyone laughed but during the interval it was easy to see that it is becoming the uniform of G.O.W.s (and yes, I was wearing some too!) BeckyBoo
Jlo, am soooooo that you went to see Grumpy Old Women! I've got the book because most of it is like reading my own autobiography and if I'm not like bits of it I'm sure I soon will be! ubereglu
Thing is, I'm 17 and I agree with a lot of the Grumpy Old Women... For example I don't like to buy clothes which aren't in nice materials or aren't going to last, but I'm not going to pay over the odds for clothes either. I dislike Topshop-mostly as they have gone 'Young', right, so I really want a nearly see-through top and a skirt that doesn't cover my behind... I'm the same with shoes too. I have a real problem buying shoes and refuse to go to Clarks as their quality is now shockingly bad and I don't want cheap fashion shoes either from places like Primark or New look. Add to this I'm a size 8/9, and have long toes and narrow heels, so where my toes are they actually measure the width of my foot.
Helly Welly
I tend to shop in H&M mostly, Topshop has got too expensive. I refuse to jump on the Primark bandwagon, everything about that shop is just wrong. I know don't dress like i "should" but if i like it then that's fine. I really admire the whole Harajuku look but i can't quite pull it off in Leicester!!
debbier
I really admire the whole Harajuku look but i can't quite pull it off in Leicester!! I don't see why not! My son went to a party last year with a harajuku theme, and died his hair bright red for it. He liked it so much that he's kept the colour for a year now. He's 6' tall, and dead easy to spot in a crowd now
Kirstine
Erm -what's Harajuku? I know they sell perfume for 'Harajuku Lovers' on easyJet, but I didn't know it was anything to do with red hair and being too frightening for Leicester! Can anyone provide an enlightening link? Charlottechicken
I have to admit to owning a pair of jeggings and am 43, but size 10/12 They were very cheap from Ethel Austin, about £8, and I bought myself a knitted dress in red from Peacocks and a trendy pair of flattish boots from Primark. I haven't had anything ultra fashionable for years so decided to get myself a trendy outfit and ended up in all the shops I never buy from because I don't like their cheap stuff and where they get it from, because I am broke Thankfully, my Christmas outfit this year is a genuine 1980's designer dress by Arabella Pollen (think "Addicted to love" video, but knee length!), bought for £1 from the market a couple of years ago. It'll go with opaque tights and Deichmann ankle boots I found on sale (I love Deichmann )
Egluntyne
Erm -what's Harajuku? Well you did ask. I can't see me pulling this look off at work somehow.
