JB09
Yesterday I popped into pets at home to grab some new treat bowls for the girls. While there I had a look in the new chicken section which now has quite a few bits in, bit expensive though. The biggest suprise however was that they are now selling chickens, The pens were quite large and they appreared to have all the necessarys, however it left me wondering if selling chickens in big pet shops like this was going to encourage people to buy chooks on a whim without fully knowing the responsibilities they face... Poached
hi you did'nt possibly go into the raynes park one did you? i went to there yesterday and i heard the man say the chickens should not be kept in groups over 4 and they are £36 for a pair and £18 extra for an additional hen josh
Lewis
They do sometimes annoy me there! What breeds were they?
Poached
he said:'a special maran cross called an ISA brown' the people were saying 'wow' josh
Sarahsausage
Oh no! That's going to be something else for me to worry about! Poor chickens, I agree with JB, people need to do their research before buying chickens, same with any new pet, seems quite irresponsible of PetsatHome, they have a bad track record of looking after animals as it is (well from what I've read on other forums anyway....) JB09
Yes it was the Raynes Park one. To be honest I don't think any of the staff had a clue what they were talking about! I hope people realise a chicken is for life... not just for christmas!
BeckyBoo
especially at £18 a hen - for this area that's pretty good value, easily affordable on the run up to Christmas with not much time for people to make informed decisions. Guest
it's no different from walking in and buying a rabbit, guinea pig, rat, mouse, budgie etc etc on a whim...I don't think pet shops should be able to sell livestock full stop. They should have a list of local breeders and send people to them direct, no matter what the animal but that's never going to happen
CluckyBucks
I totally agree with everybody's posts, i think its quite irresponsible of pets at home to have chickenss in store. People take thier dogs in there, what if it got off the lead and bounded up to the chickens?? xx xx

jkl
EIGHTEEN POUNDS PER HEN!!!!!! good grief............... my isa browns were £11 each in south oxfordshire my mother-in-law from the depths of lancashire thought that was expensive! i would find it difficult to trust a chain store when buying livestock
veggiemad
pets at home! I hope people dont buy on a whim. The only way i could get my DH to agree to my girls in the first place, was going on an omlet course. Reading my birthday book (encyclopaedia of chickens) and researching them for 6 MONTHS before he allowed me to get an eglu!! And i must say, i'm pleased he got me to do all that, coz now i feel like i am able to look after my girls properly AND............now he's hooked too, i'm getting a WIR for christmas!! x
PurpleTree
I was in a Pets At Home about a month ago and they'd just launched their chicken section, they didn't have any actual chickens though. I did buy a bag of pellets as I was running low and didn't have time to go to Countrywide, I won't buy them again though, they were more expensive and most of them seem to be ending up on the floor. I'll have to go to my local one and see if they've got chickens down there.
Gem_Seb
My local one sells accessories but not chickens. Some stores have also started selling marine fish which is also something you should not sell if you dont know about them! different corals and fish etc cannot be mixed as they will kill each other etc etc. but then again people should have a responsibility to research things before they buy as well i guess!!
