dancing cloud
My lovely Clover had to be put to sleep today . She's the first of my girls that I have lost and it was all rather sudden. I thought she had an impacted crop yesterday (turned out not to be so) and she faded very quickly during the day, not even opening her eyes for mealworms. I popped her back in with the others last night, as I didn't think she'd see the morning and I didn't want her to die alone. She survived till this morning but, after a first trip to the vets, I had to take her back at lunchtime and make the decision we all dread. Thank you to all of you for your help, advice and support with her over the last couple of days. Here she is when she was fit and well, and just being herself. I know, thanks to BHWT, she had a great 18 months with me and her little feathery pals, playing in the sun, stuffing her beak and sticking that self-same beak into all sorts of things that were not her concern. She had 18 months of being Clover, a gorgeous, nosey, cheeky chicken, with a sweet soul that will be very warmly welcomed wherever little chicken souls go. Goodbye Clover, free-ranging forever. Guest
she's absolutely beautiful, I'd never have guessed she was an ex batt, clealry loved and cared for! 18 months is a lovely long time for her to have enjoyed being a free girl and a small blessing that, towards the end, she didn't linger xxxxx

dancing cloud
Thank you to all of you for your very kind posts. It's times like this I realise just how much I value the support and friendship of this forum - you understand. A quick update that might make you smile (it did me), Clover's spot in the has now been taken - by little Moon, the very much bottom of the pecking order hen . I found her in there on Friday night and she has since decamped permanently, snuggling up to Daisy top-hen like she's found a new best friend . I haven't the heart to break it to her that she is a very long way below Daisy's notice and the admiration is not mutual. It's good to see some benefit from Clover's death, as Moon's always been quite a sad little s"Ooops, word censored!", who's never thrived as much as the others and is a small hen in every way. It quite warmed my heart to see her bunking-in with the big girls and cuddling up , and they seem to tolerate her very well - probably just think of her as a mobile hot water bottle
