The Dogmother
I always take the dealer stickers off too Lesley - I have got a BHWT one on the 'van' though, I don't mind that at all.
Guest
Unfortuatly we went to the leisure centre in a nearby town sunday afternoon for an U11's Athletics event and when we tried to start her back up afterwards she would not start. Called the garage out and they eventually came and started her but didn't know whats wrong, tried to start here again later that evening. Would not start. Phoned the garage monday morning and drove her in (she started ok) they found nothing wrong with her (i think they thought it was a figment of my imagination) When i came to drive her away from the garage she wouldn't start!!! sounds like the starter motor to me.. standard procedure (short of replacing it) is to hit the starter motor with a stick.. it is very random - sometimes it will start, sometimes not... - the solenoid sticks... ...did this for months with my old Opel Kadette... Tina C
I had the same problem with a Vauxhall Chevette (Shov'it) I had some years ago. It only used to happen when it the engine was nicely warmed up so if I needed petrol I had to get it before a long journey or face an embarrassing time on the forecourt. I think that was the same car that I had to hold in third gear, otherwise it would jump out. My first car was a Mk 2 Cortina 1600 GT, green with a black roof. shared with my boyfriend at Uni. It had been his grandad's car from new and had perfect bodywork. During our finals it got stolen - we actually saw it being driven out of the car park on campus. It was found somewhere up above the white cliffs of Dover with the engine removed. By the time the insurance company assessed it we had moved up to London. Our former house mate, who stayed on in Kent, then sold it before the insurance company collected it, but did not admit to this until some years later. And now I have a purple VW camper. Snowy
My first car was a white Honda Civic, old N reg. I drove it all round the lanes of the Lake District, wonderful car (with a proper choke!). I wrote it off on the ice. then I bought a red Honda Civic. I wrote it off in a ditch. Then I bought another red Honda Civic. Someone else tried to write it off but it survived and the engine blew up a month later. I no longer buy Honda Civics.
The Dogmother
Good call Snowy. I once had a car with a death wish - my dad made me sell it.
One Man Banned
Oh I love threads like this! My first car was a 1977 R Reg metallic brown Fiesta (RDW367R) and I bought it for £50.00 from a neighbour who had only picked it up that day from somewhere - saw it on my way home from work. It was a month before my 17th birthday and I had to have it! - cost me £750 a year insurance though... Had a hole in the back box so sounded great but had a dodgy paint finish on the roof and I painted it matt black with smooth hammerite to make it look like a canvas roof. I loved that car to bits. Had a little pump by the clutch pedal for the windscreen washer fluid too!. Took my first test in a 3 day old Vauxhall Corsa and failed. Some months later I took my OWN car and passed! Sold it for £75 to some young kid who (I didn't know this bit at the time) didn't have a licence and got several calls from the police advising me of it's current whereabouts - then three days later they called again to say it had been abandoned after hitting a banking in Ebbw Vale and the kid I sold it too had pushed it down the banking into the Festival Village Shopping Centre below! ...... I cried!! Then got a Vauxhall Astra estate, blew up three engines then it sat on my drive at home for six months. Since had a Maestro City X (very nice spec thanks very much) and the week I met Joe at my new job the exhaust fell off, engine end, ten minutes from work. NEVER had I been so embarrassed Had another few Fiesta's - the C reg one was metallic green but was a Ghia spec and was very nice that got broken into in Bristol one night, then a '94 L reg metro Diesel - then Joe bought me a H reg Volvo 460 auto to save him having to drive to Wales every weekend - oh the days of such romantic gestures......! Then I got a white Volvo 480, and bought a white Volvo S40 on the cheap from work and then I also acquired Myrtle, our 440 - when we bought another Volvo - a 940 estate TURBO! - 5 cars was a bit much though. So we sold them (bar the 440 and the 940) and moved house only for me to buy another black 480 which I still miss now - a G reg 89 with only 30K on the clock in mint condition which I sold in June Not doing bad as I've only been driving ten years! ali-s
My first car was a red Fiat Panda, registration RRC764X. I thought I was the bees knees driving about in it It had a choke that would stick when fully opened and no seat belts in the back I bought it in 1983 and sold it in 1989 when I moved to Lincoln. I didn't have a job for a while and couldn't afford to run it

Ok i know nothing about cars Phil ( ) I save what little i have of my brain for football! However i think the starter motor was repaired/replaced recently (i don't know for definite as they replaced/repaired about 4 different things and when they told me i just nodded, smiled and pretended i knew what they were talking about ) It makes a noise when you turn the key but they were thinking it might be something electrical - spark plugs???!! But they had a look this afternoon, still couldn't find anything and are keeping it in for further observation over night. Mike is suposed to bring back a hire car which is always scary to drive as mine has apparantly the heaviest steering ever according to the mechanic and i drive all over the place when i drive a 'proper' car cos the steering is so light You should see my biceps from trying to steer Vera! Anyhow i was gonna post about my car troubles in another topic but as looney started this one... Anyone know what could be wrong with it??!! Guest
Honda Prelude. What sort of answer is that?? Where's all the detail? Come on grd I'm waiting for Shona to come along and say "you liar grd!!! I know what his car was - it was a xxxx xxxxx!". I can't bring myself to say it. Anyway, it was budget car, rusted within it's first year (from new), the interior plastics just fell apart somehow. I got stopped by the police one night and they asked if I knew one of the back lights wasn't working. Obviously I didn't know, so this policeman whacked the light and it came on - he said "there you go - cheap car! Get a better quality one next time.". When I came to trade it in, it had various rattles - the main one being the braces around the rear leaf springs - I stuck bits of cardboard in them to stop the rattling. The car dealer took it for a test drive and was none the wiser. Edited January 16, 2007 by Guest

Sheilaz
Car of real character, LJ. Grd...I thought maybe you only took up driving recently when you gave your 1st answer. Was it a Robin Reliant, Graham? (very reliable on the road) ...not so reliable as they would often veer off the road. I know because we stopped to help a driver once who had done just that. Helped him back, did it again. We then agreed to escort him to the next town several miles away. It would tootle along & then veer off again, so it took a while! 1st car...OH tended to spend £50 to £100 on a Hillman Minx and a Wolsley, one of which slept 4 of us in Paris for 3 months until the brakes went. (Quite hard going round the Place de la Concorde with only a handbrake and no windscreen wipers!) Upon our return I went back to my steady banking job, and received a small inheritance, so splashed out myself on the next car for OH (I didn't drive then). A black mark 2 jaguar...a fantastic car, only £200! We still have the "Jaguar" on our mantelpiece. The car? OH wrote it off after 3 weeks... The Dogmother
Go on Graham, was it a Nissan Sunny?
Cate in NZ
Mine was a Metro. 2nd hand, horrible beige colour, but the first car that was actually mine, as opposed to me driving my parents, or later my hubby's car . I've had a few cars since though. Currently driving an Astra, which fulfilled a dream as I'd always wanted a convertible, so hubby got me this little baby for my 40th birthday . Sheilaz
My first car when I could actually drive it was a Nissan Sunny estate, company car! It was the most reliable car we've had, not a minute of trouble. Sunny, what a good name. I wonder what happened to it? Perhaps OH swapped it when he got a Morgan 2 seater (practical family car with a baby and no use for delivering half a tonne of plastic )
The Dogmother
Hearing your car histories, I am trying to remember all of mine. There was a break though when I lived in London and didn't need a car. But there was: Fiat 500 Austin Allegro (blumming awful) Ford Escort mark II Metro (dire) Ford Fiesta Ford Orion Citroen Xantia Peugeot 106 and...... THE VAN! In between, I also drove various company and boyfriends' cars including a Bedford Rascal van, VW camper van, BMW 3 series and 7 series (both pants), Honda Accord (nice drive), Vauxhall Astra (Phil's car and total rubbish). I can also drive a fork lift truck (no licence though) and would love to get my HGV licence
